First set of spurs

The Opsal and Mallory brands won't fit aluminum bashlins. I guess there must be another brand I don't know about. What is the brand on yours Burnham?

The main thing is to get a rigid pad that will hold the shank next to your leg steady so it can't wobble.

That is the key to spike happiness, shanks that don't move and rub yer shin raw. It helps to have shoes with a stiff sole.

My boots wore out and I didn't get new ones yet so I've been spiking in low top hiking shoes... and they are totally comfortable! I figured I was in for a bad day when I had two big oaks to piece down but five hours later, no pain. I didn't even notice a difference.

Lowa tempest Lo, damn good tree shoes.

I did a bunch of hemlock removals the other day in my Etnies skate shoes because I had a brain fart, leaving my boots at home. I was really surprised how comfortable they were, though I had to empty the saw dust from my shoes after every tree. :|:

i know this thread is old, but, have any of y'all tried the komet spikes? i have the buckingham titaniums with the "Cadillac" pads and they have done me well for 8 years, but... that straight shank rubs my ankle bone and the pads rotate round to the back of my calf. ive tried the aluminum pads from 2 different manufacturers in 2 different sizes and my chicken legs are just too skinny. soo.... one day ill probly plunk down on a pair of geckos, or komets if any one can recommend them. jaime

Have you ever tried the shin cup pads? Far more comfortable than the huge, bulky aluminum framed pads.

The only gaffs I've used in the last 15 years have been the Kleins and the T2 Titaniums from Buckingham. The T2s are lighter, but in all honesty I think the Kleins were more comfortable. I really liked the offset gaff which made it very easy to get a good bite in all but the skinniest tops. I've never worn the Gecko spikes but they have a similar offset gaff.

i have tried just about every pad out there. my legs are just too damn skinny. all those rigid pads are made to fit a range of leg sizes and i seem to be outside that range every time. i have been thinking of making some custom pads a la gecko, form fitted plastic or fiberglass, i just haven't had the time (and it wouldn't fix the ankle rubbing). the komets looked interesting, the butterfly seemed well made and i liked it (exept it didnt fit me), but ive never seen any reviews. jaime

 Those are probably the second worst pads out there, the worst being the basic leather pads that come stock. The ones I posted above fit nicely over your shins and if they are too wide then you can squeeze them in your bench vise to make them tighter.

The pads Brian posted are the best I've ever worn. Small, yet comfortable.

Skinny legs? Go to a sporting goods store and purchase a set of soccer forearm/knee pads. Cut out the elastic behind the knee, and you're good to go.

Because the pads are an instant fix?

Why pack the xtra weight around in the tree? The ultimate climbing body build is upper body development with strong slender legs and ass.
