davey tree

I have interviewed with them. They are a great company. Have done a couple of Tds for them.

I just cant deal with corperate crap. They are so big they have to have everybody following the same methods.

Nothing good is heard of the local branch here. They are almost nonexistant.

Wonder how many employees they have in total? Big turnover with workers?

Dont know about numbers. But here their help does seem to stay. If for nothing else the education that Davey offers it's employees is first rate.

But as John brought up not all of thier branch offices are benchmarks for our industry.

The turn over rate and quality of the Davey worker depends almost entirely on how the district manager keeps the level of expertise up. I worked for the company for 6 years.

I think the 'quality' of Davey varies greatly from place to place.
Here, they are pretty much known as the bottom of the barrel. But even here, different crews show huge differences in ability and quality. Then there is the Davey Tree Expert Co. and Davey Tree line clearance. Two totally different companies.

I have never subbed for them, but then again it is far easier to chase a bigger dollar in private work.

sad really
id say the recesssion is still taking us deeper

mainly due to fear i think

My neighbor is a custom tile artist. She has been in buisness for years. She doesn't do any buisness locally, all on the internet.

Work has been very slow for her and a lot of her clients are upper end. I think people are being very carefull with their money.

Cobleskill.....I think your right. Watched a news blip the other day where they were telling about how much the bailed out banks are making killer profits off of the soaring deposits folks are putting into savings.

Have been looking at Davey as a place to go to work for because of their attitude toward education but they just lost a big contract to another line clearance co. here in MI. Am planning on working for someone else by this spring, just not sure who yet. There seem to be a lot of opportunities around the country but almost nothing here in MI. Things are pretty bad here employment wise.

I think they only do line clearance around here. I had a climber who had spent a couple of years with them when he first started, up in Stephen's area. He said they were required to touch 6 trees a day, and after they did this they would try and find some out of the way place to hide the trucks and lounge around the rest of the day.

I am on the MCA exam committee with a Davy employee. I never miss a chance to get jabs in on the way only certain climbing equipment is allowed...I mean they have it down to specific 'biners, rope etc. Industry standards be damned, they have more stringent rules.

I guess it is pretty easy to understand how a big company like that would be on the conservative side with regulations. Wonder if they have a full time specialist regarding safety?

They have hundreds, Jay.

I had one show up on a job and tie a stopper knot in the end of my lifeline while I was in a very tight-crotched oak. He left and 3 minutes later my rope got stuck. I had to untie and pull my rope out of my tie in point before I could get down and unstick it, then I had to climb back up to the top again to reset my tie in point. I was furious at him and have NEVER tied a stopper knot in my lifeline since.

G, I just helped judge at our chapter TCC, tying a stopper knot in the set climber line and the rescue climber line prior to ascending to resuce said climber were bonus points eh. :)
