City business license

Here, all you do is to have insurance and a contractor's license. Except for the city of modesto which has a mil tax which I must fill out every quarter. I've gotten one job from the city of modesto list. I think I'm on six cities and the county. All I do is to pay money and get nothing.

I get frustrated with city licenses, I have around 10 of them. I think cities should verify legality of a business if it is required by state. Here you need to have a construction contractors license, bond and insurance to be legal, cities should verify that imo before issuing a license. Otherwise the only thing I think they should do is require an industry certification to work on their trees, if Joe Blow wants to hire a legal outfit to top trees on his own land, so be it.

This cracked me a couple weeks ago, 3 years ago someone turned this pin oak into the first picture, recently someone pruned it:lol:

It was getting out of control.

Erik, you are absolutely right , it is going up, last year I paid $50.

The idea of legitimizing businesses so homeowners don't get ripped off is a noble cause, but I don't see it happening. Back when I was roofing regularly, the state of Alabama issued a royal decree that "contractors" had to be licensed. I walked in the probate judge's office, told them I needed a state license for roofing, told them my approximate yearly gross, paid them their money and walked out a licensed contractor. I then proceeded to do roofs for folks who bragged and bragged on the last guy to do their roof....said roofer who had since retired, died, moved away, etc. When I got up on the roof and saw the work, I wouldn't have let the guy roof a doghouse for me. The point is, if the customer is happy, there's not a lot the city/county/etc has to do/say in the matter.

The same idea can apply to any arena of employment. Doctors, dentists, mechanics, plumbers, the list is endless. Having them pay a fee and obtain a license/permit/etc is NOT going to ensure that they will perform quality work.
