When a boy, I had what they called a snapping turtle. I held it up to my best friend's face and it bit him on the nose, breaking the skin. He went running home crying and his mother came over to complain. I was punished and had to go over and apologize, but my friend soon forgot about it.

No kidding...snappers from where I grew up could get well over 50 pounds and would most certainly take a finger or toe clean off.

Yep In Turtle Lake not too far from where I grew up there was this huge snapper called Moses about 2 foot across. He was more of a local legend but ever now and again he would make an appearance.

Me and my 'lil bro found one when we were kids. The sucker was about 15" and when my dad saw it he said "Get rid of that damned thing! And don't get bit!!!" Ha, we were trying to make a pet out of it.

I've had a few. What's important is that they only keep it a month or two and then return it to the wild. They decline in long term captivity without a large natural pen. On the other hand, I've kept frogs (Blinky for instance) much longer than their predicted life span.

I think box turtles are pretty much harmless .They aren't this far north but are numerious in the southern portion of the state .

Now a snapper is another story .This rascals could take finger off . It's claimed there are seven types of meat on a snapper but it just tastes like turtle to me .

Box turtles carry a lot of nasty microbial pests. You want to clean up after handling them.

We kept a male and female in the office for a few weeks, just let'em go wherever they wanted, they got lost a few times but always turned back up. The male was a horny bastard, mounted the female lots of times but she had a headache and stayed boxed up.

We used to jug for snappers to eat or use a .22 to pick them off logs in ponds.

We used to set "trot lines " for snappers .About 100 feet of nylon chalk line with a hook every 3-4 feet with a chicken neck on it .We kept the turtles in my buddys' mothers outside pantry in a wash tub .

Well one day they all got loose and the old gal got a little upset when she tried to get a can of green beans and stepped on a big snapper .Within the next few days we were butchering turtles .You know a turtle is about like a headless chicken except they can't fly .Damned things walk around for twenty minutes while the head sits there and snaps at things .Strange !:?
