I use SuSE in a server config on my system(dual boot with XP). I use linux for remote data storage mostly when I'm on the road, and Windows for video and photograph editing as well as CAD work.
By the way, Mac already run a .NIX core. It's basically Unix with a user friendly GUI and a price tag that keeps Steve Jobs smiling.
I'm running Ubuntu Linux on a cheapo Gateway laptop. It does waaaay better than the Windows Vista that came installed on it, and I like the fact that there is tons of free software for Linux, just about anything you can think of.
