Wow lot going on! IMO you need to rig up a tarp on that dump trailer to make it better to blow chips in. Would just take some 1" PVC pipe and a $50 mesh tarp then no more mess

Glad you are busy, I have just slowed down

We had figured out a tarp set up while there. I have some repair to do on the trailer. New metal up front etc. Once that is done, I will apply a more permanent solution as you described.

Hell of a job Stephen. Did you get a log count or approximate board footage? Hopefully a nice pay day

No log or lumber count. We hired subs for hauling to various disposal sites. Rob did mill about 7000 board feet on a cut list to make the larger logs smaller for transpor t. Lumber was given away to the person that made the cut list and they hauled it off. Rob was paid by the hour for milling the wood as part of the hauling and disposal fees. There is probably another 7000 board feet in logs we had transported to our landing. 14000 bfn is a small fraction of what came off the place. A lot of what was hauled off (smaller) went for fire wood. SOme of the larger went to private hobby mills.

Wow. I wish they'd hurry up and get that tunnel from Europe to the Us dug.
That would have been fun to help out with. Looks like you could have gotten some use out of a logger used to making tight shots.

I see Rob is still struggling with the concept of hard hats:lol:
45 tight shots and one tree causality isn't too bad ;) .
I did keep wishing you could have been here for it. You would have had a blast.
And Rob ....well..... he is pretty good at staying out of the fall zones on the mini. Can't fix him....

Cool thread!!

Was it difficult to put an accurate price on such a large job?

Very Cory. This was my most complex job in my career thus far. Crazy logistics. Sub contractors. Huge yardage and weights. All in a little bitty box of a yard by our standards.
I set about looking at each tree as an individual removal. Added about 40-50 percent more for material handling. Some stuff we got lucky and got to dump 1/2 way to our dump site or closer. Some stuff was a 2 hour one way trip.
We had to have made a decent penny on it as I have a lot of new kit to show for it and the bills are paid. Everyone got paid and made money on it.
Did something right, just have no idea how we pulled it off other than having a great team of people that just worked out.
Avg cost per tree came in pretty good considering one tree alone I would have charged 3000-3500 just to get it all on the ground and chipped. Not including wood removal.

Good grief, Stephen.....is that ALL the pics you got? I was expecting more than that? :P

Great pics!

I have only touched the surface my friend...
Beginnings of the log decks and more...... First we took down all the trees on one side of the property next to the driveway for a staging area. IMG_0800.jpg IMG_0817.jpg IMG_0816.jpg IMG_0815.jpg IMG_0813.jpg IMG_0811.jpg IMG_0807.jpg IMG_0805.jpg IMG_0803.jpg IMG_0818.jpg
The last picture is where we had to pick the logs out with the crane. We zip lined the brush (at one point two climbers in two trees side by side on two lines at the same time) to two different points. Then Gin pole the logs until they were low enough for the crane to pick.

Wow! Way to Go, Stephan. Impressive job. I can believe you could want a change of scenery after that.

I concur, woulda been an interesting work-(va)cation.

Katy got a lot of Dave. Lighting was tough. She also tried to get some of the ground crew doing what they were doing. Like was mentioned. A lot was going on. I would be zip lining stuff on one side of the property while Dave was lowering or bombing on the other. Dingo all over the place forwarding the limbs or wood. Dale's John Deer moving and loading wood from the staging area to his log trailer. Chipper going full on. 5 Comm units paired off chattering in and out. Neighbours coming and going to check on our work. The HO snapping pictures. I have yet to get those. Should be soon. We had a lot to do to prep for the excavator and the crane. Some of the first trees downed were just to make room. The equipment had to get in too.

Great job Stephen! How did you manage to get five headsets paired? That is a mystery I have been trying to solve for a while now.

I used the Tree Stuff video as a guide. Worked great and I could have two groups this way and go back and forth between them. The first day.... Fussy after that. I think they get interference sometimes and just won't join in. But, I got it to work on crane day.

I have one more day over there yet. I have to spread some new rock on the driveway where we had a lot of traffic, and bolt and cable the one tree I smacked.
All told 15.
Not large crews every day though. Crew of 6 the first day. 4 the next. 5th day was crazy. Crane, excavator,6 man crew, log transporting.
The last week was mostly Rob milling wood and wood transport. Small clean up crew one day. Crew of 4 on another job...
I need a vacation

Very cool you all made out well. I would imagine that there aren't many outfits in your area that could handle that.

There are indeed a few. I think we do more rigging than most. And with the mill now, mixed with more residential experience instead of the logging, we provide a nice finished product and some alternative ways of producing that.

Some more..... I need to probably render some vid tonight to show some action against the still shots.

I'm glad you posted up more pics. The groundies and I spent lunch time admiring your work. I was pretending to be you west coasters yesterday. Crispy scotch pine removals. Couldn't get any flaggers so I could set up the truck. Had to climb. Of course mine were little 60 footers. Can't wait to see more.

Happy you are enjoying these. I feel like I am over posting, but three weeks of pictures do tell a story in a sense. Katy tried to capture some more ground works pictures than we normally do. Pictures of the Team. I will be making a disc of all of them for each person that worked the job.
Right now I am rendering some of the video and will share more tonight I hope. I have to run out to the next town over to do some banking. Pouring rain right now. Day off..... I think that is what I used to call it.
Just a note. I did most of the smaller wiggly trees on the first couple days I was there. I am the lightest climber. Just made sense. Less chance of breaking a top out.
No bucket and all that ;)
