It's hard to imagine the conflict of cultures that would occur within the close quarters of a ship. You can think that if everyone just did their job, everything would be OK, but it has to be more complex than that.

Cultural thinking differences can be really at odds with each other, and it often isn't something that can be rationally figured out. When you get to the point of being caught between both worlds, it can really wig you out.

Very true Jay. I have experienced this in China. It is, of course, a very different culture from Japan, but it is at least equally as inscrutable to outsiders.
