Finding/ Transitioning to an Office Assistant

We have a part time office person. She is great. Really good on the phone and works with our schedule and payroll processing, and keeping me up to date on the ins and outs. Couldn't do it without that position honestly. She makes 14/hr right now with medical benefits. Very very obviously worth...

    Jambo Videos

I'm pretty confident Jambo will become more and more common over the next 5 - 10 years. To me it is a much closer format to how we actually work and perform our tasks on a day to day. It's like doing 4 master's trees at full on sprint mode. I can't remember ever being so wiped out in a tree...

$15/hr minimum wage- what's it mean to you?

FWIW, we aim for approx 30% of overhead towards payroll. This keeps the gross margin high enough be "acceptable" to me, but in reality a lot of that true margin gets reinvested back into the company in some form or another. jp:D

$15/hr minimum wage- what's it mean to you?

Nick are you saying your climbers are making $45.00/hr?? 3% profit margin doesn't seem like an acceptable level of return with the risk associated with this type of work. You could get a better return sleeping in all day and let your money work. The business has to be healthy, as do the...

how to charge for hours worked?

I think if you start running multiple crews and you personally aren't onsite, bidding hourly can be very nice. We shoot for between 70-80/man hour in Hawaii for most pruning jobs and 90-100 for larger removal projects when we have to bid by the hour plus the added costs like log disposal etc. It...

    New Lowering Device

Yes very true and an excellent point. This ties back to product development and marketing, which I'm pretty much ignorant to. My hunch would be that companies like DMM that cater to the very people I described in my earlier post, improve upon or re-develop products/equipment that are already...

    New Lowering Device

I didn't see a question anywhere in your reply(s)? The point I'm on here is that I think the route you/stein took in developing a winch (lifting operation) external of the bollard although innovative in this application, I see as a downside for a number of different reasons. Again I could be...

    Using Two Climb Lines

So are you tending two different devices (rope runner, RW, HH whatever??) at the same time throughout your entire climb?? I'm having a hard time envisioning how it works Kevin? jp:D

    New Lowering Device

Jay that opinion is based on experience working with different companies and getting a decent amount of exposure to the guys working in the field. The majority of the guys that I personally interact with either don't have the money, time, education, or desire to invest in researching the various...

    New Lowering Device

Again, I could be way off base here and I certainly hope for the sake of your time/investment and Stein's as well I am. I'm giving you my initial thoughts having watched the video of how it's setup and operated. In real life it may perform in a way that doesn't parallel how I envision it to...

    New Lowering Device

Reg do you really want constructive criticism or do you want more applauds and pats on the back? You decide what you're open to hearing. The GRCS and HOBBS have done really well in the market (esp. the GRCS) worldwide for a good reason. As has the port a wrap. From my conversations with...

    New Lowering Device

I've never really understood the huge fan base of the GRCS. It's a great lifting device if you want to lift a 300lb log for 50 ft. For taking out slack on a large trunk section and then transitioning to a lowering operation in a short period of time, I never liked or trust ed the device at the...

    The Official Work Pictures Thread

Here's one of many trees we worked on a week or so back at the zipline project on big island. The trees are an anomaly here we worked on one casuarina that was close to 200' tall from the base down in a gully I couldn't believe it until we strung our ropes out and figured the height to our tie...

Ramps and loading tracked mini-skid in chip box

If you're running a 532dx which it sounds like you will be, i would buy the 7K ramps from TNE. They are aluminum and we use them all the time to load mini and other equipment into the back of an F550 works great. The only change I would consider would be to modify the ends of the ramps to make...
