Does art imitate life, or is there simply art in the act of living?

The magic mcguffin of my current fiction project, the pivotal technology that makes the whole thing work, is essentially a super-intelligent, sapient fungal system. When mankind finally found it, and learned to communicate with it, we were basically handed four different types of Faster Than Light travel.I based the concept off of Pando, and the massive fungal mass that apparently regulates the Aspen grove, and the assertion by famed mycologist Paul Stamets, that the mycelial mass is behaving in an intelligent manner. That and the idea of cosmic horror level entities in our own back yard.
Anywho, it figures that shroom stuff is going to come up, I been thinking hard enough about it, and the universe responds to frequencies in odd ways.
