Tell me why exactly you think they should be made out of 10 gauge instead of slightly lighter metal? One solid reason is all I'm looking for. I'm a big believer in reason rather than "It must be that way because that's the way they do it."

How about "go big or go home", but I think utilizing scrap from a manufacturing process is the best one as has been already said.
 
Really only 3 bends/breaks. And a quick welding of a strap on the bottom side. Maybe a chain with clip on the front for extra measure, if you made them flat instead of angled.

You're forgetting to add going to get the metal to make them out of, getting you're tools out and cleaning up when you're done.

I'm with brendon on this one. If it isn't a big money item, I think it's important to use your time making estimates or something that is going to be a better use of your time.
