What? The topping claim? I don't know, it's the terminology I've used when referring to a branch that hasn't been pruned back to the appropriate sized lateral.

What makes that size 'appropriate'? The 1/3 rule is a BS myth, unless you can show otherwise...

I was trained the 2/3 rule.

And it's aesthetics driven more than anything. And I certainly wouldn't discount that as BS.

I was also trained to the 1/3 rule, and preached it. I was so much older then; I'm younger than that now.

Aesthetics are a valid objective, but looks change over time (and my mirror agrees). We gotta think in tree time, and help tree owners look ahead.

Health and structure and tree contributions are very strong objectives.
