Mostly a pop and then slack. I know ropes can store an awful lot of energy, but every one I've ever broken has been remarkably un-eventful, so far as ropes whipping around and such.

Steel cable is another matter entirely, as we all know. Back when my dad was driving tow trucks and pulling wrecks out of the Salt River Canyon, he snapped the J hook off of 300 ft of cable. The whole length just swung 90° to the right, parallel with the road and wrapped up in the guardrail. It swept the slope completely clean, threw crap everywhere. Obviously there was an enormous amount of energy stored in that cable, and it had to go somewhere.

With new, good condition rigging line you’d have to work pretty hard, and be pretty stupid to snap it.
As Kavey says, when it does happen it’s a lot less dramatic than some would have you believe.

Others experience may be different.

I am going out on a short limb and saying a 5/8” stable braid is strong enough to break the traction of any on road vehicle( four wheels) pulling on it from the dirt.

5/8” or 3/4” amsteel II will pull everything. I think Stig had 1” amsteel II and pulled with a forwarder.

go with 3/4“ and you have better ratio WLL. also terminate with large portawraps so you don‘t loose strength like with knots.

Ive only broke 5/8ths one time. Butt tied 40 or so inch by 40 foot log with my 36" dead eye. No more dead eye

I've snapped 1/2" quite a few times, and 9/16" once (Stable Braid) while pulling. he drama of the rope breaking isn't near as monumental as what happens next with the piece being pulled. I bought a 175' length of 7/8" StableBraid a. while back for a job I had pulling a really big tree. Wound up reducing its weight a bit and pulling with 3/4" and 5/8" lines. I hate rolling that 7/8" rope up. It gets incredibly heavy before you're done.

I broke on ancient 1/2" in a no-risk pulling a back leaner scenario. Idk what happened, as knowing the situation, i was ducked out of harm's way , down behind the machine.

Remember that the rigging point is to be the weak link in the whole system!

I had a job where the tree must go this way. 110’ 50” DBH cottonweed slight back weight over the transmission lines for an industrial park. Big c-sucker of a tree slightly swampy ground so it was full of water. The city didn’t want to cut it, utilities said it was outside their ROW( doubtful), but anyway my 3/4” has miles on it. So go big or go home. That job paid for the line. I have also used it to fish out a big willow out of a lake whole. 14:1 pulling with the mini. Something like 42,000 lbs of theoretical pull. There’s pics of that job in the work pics thread. Six years ago I think.

Someone gave me about 100’ altec 1.25” rope. So that’s what I use if I’m not using winch cable. Sometimes both.

Why go larger than 3/4"?

I have 7/8", I don't use it that often, but it's nice to have.

With bigger equipment comes the option for bigger pulls, if you have the situation to make it make sense and the gear to pull it off. (punny)

The swing out station can come out to the left and the right. From the right, with the belt and covers in the way it’s not good.
From the left (pictured) it’s better than you think, because there’s only one lever to operate (as opposed to the two levers, ergo two handed operation of the Rayco) you can walk further around and get decent visibility.
