another day of stormdamage/dead trees by the lake. i‘m quite happy how the job is going this far. today we start with climbing to remove broken limbs.

The one that almost got away. Positioned my truck opposite the main “don’t want it to go that way” lean but a little behind the lay. I had 8 wedges in the back cut. They polished the wood and embedded in the end grain. Also should have put a pulley on the pull tree and run the tail of the cable to another tree.

Hazard tree removals and slope stabilization featuring virtually no- drag and a 14hp micro drum chipper. The eroding slope, 45⁰ and steeper in bits, that supports this 1980s house has lots of bare soil. I've removed 2 other good sized trees and some small ones. We'll add more mulch and plant some large-maturing native shrubs and small-maturing native trees in the late winter .
She's had landscaping done that prevents the mini and 7.5' wide chipper from accessing things as in the past.
Chipped to about 2.5 inches, blowing into the slope. Built horizontal retaining structures with the rest of the material. Logs uphill of trees/ stumps or staked in place.

Nice vid. Quite the thorough grind on that one. Interesting such a large stump can be ground without moving any grindings out the way. I personally would never run that machine without at least more cranial PPE.
I went on the Rayco site to be reminded of whether the 165 is gas or diesel, they put it in a bizarre way: "The 165-hp gasoline engine meets emissions requirements without the need for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)"
Don't ya just hate those gas engines that do need DEF??

I had a fun experience two weeks ago closing a road. It was a big cottonweed by the side of the road in a wealthy neighborhood. Roads all coned off machines are impassably blocking the road so no danger of anybody driving thru. A lady comes screeching up to the cones arms flailing like she was having a seizure “ I live down there and how do I get to my house with you blocking the road?” My replies was “how long have you lived here?” Puzzled she looks at me and I say “go back one street and go around the block” she says “I’ve never been that way” and stormed off. Mind you the detour was you literally had to drive around one house, three rights and a left, not even a hundred yards worth of driving. Who the hell buys a house in that neighborhood and doesn’t know how to get to their house.

Cranial or facial PPE? Standing perpendicular to the wheel is fairly safe.
I ground deeper than usual to reduce the chance of material being thrown forward by keeping the deflector low.
It's definitely gas, a similarly powered diesel grinder would be around $200k. Practically the difference in fuel consumption vs cost will never break even.

My helper spent ~15 minutes with a hose soaking around that stump. I wear a mask running the blower or if I can't get out of the way running the stump grinder.

Makes for happier lungs.
I wear a respirator regularly.
We have minimal to no summer rain so it gets dusty without grinding or blowing.

I don't know how you handle road closures, but here it takes two weeks to get permission from the traffic police. A two-week wait is unacceptable to me!)
