I am going to build one of those! Is the vermiculite an insulation? I would want it for heat, I guess firebricks would be the key then?

the idea is to keep the combustion zone as hot as possible to promote complete combustion of the fuel, thus the insulation. the hot gasses flowing through the upper chamber is what heats the room. it is definitely a fun project. here is pt 2

I have been looking into the rocket stoves. I am in the planning stage of building an off the grid 1 bedroom residence. The foundation of the structure will have a 2-3' vessel built in filled with rock and water as a heat storage device and heated via solar. Toying with the idea of building in a rocket stove so after long periods of no sun it could be heated with wood... Obvious problem is if it doesn't work well you are kinda screwed as it is under your house......

If you just heat up that PVC Tee with a torch or something (hot air gun?) with out setting on fire... it should just fold right up with a little coaxing and you can pull it right out. I would try that prior to burning it out.

Someday I'll figure this out.

Thanks Burnham. One day I'll make it happen.
When my buddy at the glass shop replaced yesterdays mishap, he mentioned this. Very interesting.
