I have some work in your fair country. Flipping bloody excellent!!! Possibly two jobs a week apart, one in New York and one in Los Angeles. Has anyone actually driven between these two cities? If so what were your experiences? I want to take a week doing it and assumed (as a tourist) that route 66 would be good.
Thoughts?

Route 20...."Main Street USA".

Be sure to pop up for that beer.

You could do it most likely in 7 days via interstate 80 .Slip south a hundred sixty miles going across Ohio and take I 70 which take you through Denver if you want to see Colorado .Either way part of it is rather boring, namely the priarie of Kansas or the corn fields of Iowa depending on the route .

Last year I drove from Florida to northern California and back. I drove 7000 miles in two weeks and didn't really knock myself out doing it. But then I find driving relaxing and have no problem driving 15-20 hours straight before stopping for a few hours. There is good reason why the central part of the US is known as 'flyover country', there isn't a heck of a lot to see once you're a hundred miles west of the Mississippi river until you get to the Rocky Mountains.

Say it took the "Bush Weasel " who is on another site 4 days to make it from Idaho to Ohio which would be about half the distance of NY to LA if that tells you any thing . You're going to have to have the hammer down to do it in 7 days .NYC to mid Ohio is 18 hours, from there to Denver 24 .Denver is about half way, more or less to the left coast .

I had a buddy when I was in the navy that made it from LA to Boston in 4 days but he was all bennyed up .Zombie behind the wheel of a '54 "vette .

 Reminds me of this...

The best way to drive across Kansas or Oklahoma is at night. Set the cruise control at 80 and rack up the miles. I found the more northerly route from Colorado through Idaho and northern California much nicer than the southern route through Arizona and New Mexico.

That's quite the accomplishment Al.

Jason, what are your thoughts on high desert terrain? There's a lot of nothing out there. Better to spend your time in a few key places. Route 66 isn't what it used to be, highways have bypassed a lot of it.

Jesus, there is more to KS than just I-70. But I'm sure some will never figure that out.

Think about making it two weeks and meet some T'housers along the way Jason, hell, I'll rob a bank to buy you a beer!

Darn, I guess I'm in the middle now too.

I hope once the work dates and locations are finalised I will be able to organise meeting up with some Housers and drinking beer. If i had more time It would be a great tour via the treehouse. That would be a great thread too.
I'll let you know when things are finalised. Some good advice there folks. Thanks.

Good lord Al, maybe by pony express! I live 3 1/2 hours NE of NYC and have driven to Cincy in 14 hours and that was with 2 kids (lots of stopping):whine:
I suppose maybe so "lead foot " .However I was refering to some time back going accross I-80 in winter from New London Conn . which would be an hour and a half closer to NYC than you are .

....way back I drove the southern route LA to Vermont in 3.5 days .... we switched drivers and did whatever else we had to do to keep rolling....

I drove across Kansas and I thought it was quite interesting. I'm a farmer/cowboy guy so I may b e a little different than the average Joe. If I remember right we left from St. Joseph, MO and headed west on that highway there. It was intresting to watch the crops change from corn, to milo, to wheat as the climate gets dryer the further west you go. All the towns centered around a grain mill and pretty evenly spaced down the highway.
