"Neato! Look how tall they make their grain elevators in the midwest. Where do they get their corrugated steel? It looks different than ours...."

Sounds like wild times Steve.

Jason, these guys are mostly concentrating on getting from right to left coast in as short a time as possible. That's the absolutely wrongest way you could possibly go about it, imo.

Back in the days when we were seasonal FS employees w/o benefits nor job security, my wife and I made several cross country round trips by car, Oregon to Florida and back. I've done it taking 5 months, 4 months, and 6 weeks.

Take my word for it, 6 weeks was by far the least enjoyable, because it forced a pace that was too hurried.

But then, I'm a strange bird in many ways...if there was a way to avoid the interstate route, we'd usually take it. If we saw an interesting natural feature or little town, we'd stop and spend a day or three. We camped almost exclusively, which takes more time in getting to and from a good place to do so, and in basic logistics.

Now I know you can't take months to do this, but take as much time as you possibly can. There is more to see and enjoy in this country than you could ever accomplish in several lifetimes...take your time.

You are so right, Burnham.
I've crossed your great nation several times, there is much to see, even in the middle.
Since Jason doesn't have a lot of time, maybe we should be giving him some ideas about good places to check out on the way across.
A lot of the ones I know, are only interesting for birdwatchers, but the natives must have lots of good ideas.

À propos Birdwatching, I crossed Nebraska once when all the canada geese and sandhill cranes were migrating.
Gazillions of birds in the sky and a fantastic sunset, too.
I sure didn't mind that the place was flat.

Grand Canyon, Bryce, Giant Sequoias, Redwoods. Niagara Falls would be a disappointment probably. The city is wasted. The Falls are cool. The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mts are pretty. Mammoth Cave Carlsbergh Caverns Zion. Some stuff to check out. All depends are what you are into.

I hope once the work dates and locations are finalised I will be able to organise meeting up with some Housers and drinking beer. If i had more time It would be a great tour via the treehouse. That would be a great thread too.
I'll let you know when things are finalised. Some good advice there folks. Thanks.

Stay South of the Columbia river and you'll be fine.

One of these days imma taking a sports bike up to the Blue Ridge Parkway :) I had a mate in West Virginia and he rated it.

Actually I 've never taken the time so smell the roses in a manner of speaking .Always just getting from point a to point b .

In defense of poor old flat as pancake Kansas I've heard the portion I 70 goes through is not represenative of the entire state .Just like the north western portion of Ohio where I live is a poor example of this state .NYC certainly doesn't mean all of NY is that way .Fact is the upstate crowd don't even want to claim it .
