Paul,
Hold down your Alt key and press different number combinations,
like 6669 and this ♪ will appear when you release the Alt key. Try 9998 and you get this ♫.

You can try 3, 4 or 5 number combinations. I did not try 6 numbers yet, but I will continue to play with it. I write down the different combinations for stuff I could probably use in the future.

Have fun. ☼ É Ü ±

Go to Start, Accessories, System Tools, Character Map.

The few characters that I use often are quicker and easier to input using the Alt and number keys. For instance, you can put the degree sign °, which I use the most, by simply holding down your Alt key and pressing 248. When you release the Alt key, ° will appear. That is way quicker than pulling the character map, locating the ° character and copying into your text.

In Vista it's
Start> all programs> accessories> system tools> character map
XP will be similar but I've forgotten. I know it's in the System Tools file.
I've pinned it to my start menu so I can pull it up quickly (2 clicks). I use it for the cents sign and fractions mostly.

OK. I did some searching through very nerdy forums. Others have had problems getting tht alt code thing to work while on XP.

One suggested to make sure your Num Lock wasn't on. I turned it off. It still didn't work.

I turned it back on. ♪ It worked.

But then I turned it off. ♪ and now it STILL works. :|:

Don't know why, but don't care. It works now. :D
