I have 2 of my own slings setup just like this Kevin and I have one CO who has decades of experience with tree work. He does not like to use them, but will as long as they are used in pairs. I have other (younger, less experienced) CO's that I use sometimes and we have used them by themselves with no issues. IMO, its all about proper balance-point-rigging in setting up the pick.
Both nylon or polyester, I think what most synthetic lifting slings are made from, degrade from exposure to UV. That one that broke sure looked sun beaten faded. Store them out of the sun when not in use at job sites wherever.
