I never knew that. I've always cranked them down as tight as I could get them. I noticed one thing today that it is harder to balance on really skinny spars when the strap is loose. Or at least I'm just not used to it yet. The spur wanted to move around a little under my boot, and it made me feel off balance on the really skinny stuff. It got to the point where I cranked them down while I was on the skinny stuff then loosened off when I got on bigger wood.
I don't have a new set of climbers, but in my case having all the straps tight sure feels good on my Varicose veins, actually seems to have reduced them!
