Yep, some detergents contain (like dishwasher powder) contain caustic agents that pit aluminum and accelerate aluminum oxidation. Would be bad JUJU.

Wow, that's spooky.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that John was absolutely right in the beginning of this thread when he recommended wd-40. Carabiners don't need lots of lube, they need to be clean. wd-40 followed by a good blast from an air nozzle will do that as well as anything and won't leave a sticky residue to attract dirt. As an added bonus, it doesn't require boiling water and possibly compromising the integrity of your lifeline connection.
