Lubing carabiners

What a trip. We weren't even close. First one broke sat 2658, second one broke at 2143. Sounded weird too, not the sharp crack that aluminum biners make usually. a real soft sound like a french fry snapping in half.

I'm looking for my camera now. I'll get some pics then load them when I get home. The computer in the rigging room don't have a sd slot.

I was gonna say 2400.5 :/:

Sean - have you got any more of those krabs ?(similar age & usage would be amazing) Would be nice to get a control test. Will pay for the tests & krabs etc if that's an issue.
I have been cleaning krabs by gentle boiling in water for years & the results are of great interst/importance

I always throw in bits of broken ceramic to keep it off the bottom Burnham & keep the temp as low as possible. I want the bubbling action to clean not superheat the krabs . I am re-thinking my methods as I type

I used a small trivet the last time I cleaned a batch...I like the idea of using the steamer basket that Stephen pictured, and I have a couple in the kitchen. A metal colander in a large pot would do as well.

With the basket, one could heat the water to just under a boil, then turn it off and dunk the biners in and out repeatedly. That would agitate the water to assist cleaning, but not be so hot.

I don't know what brand of 'biners those were. I looked on Wesspur and Sherrilltree's websites, but without luck in IDing them. I would have almost 100% have gotten them from one of those two sources, only having tried out TreeStuff recently. I suspect that those were purchased 2-3 years ago.

now the wife is going to be REALLY confused! rope in the washing machine, biners in the sauce pan, saws everywhere, and now harnesses in the hot tub!

A word of warning on cleaning chemicals for aluminum alloys, magnesium and Titanium.

Caustic chemicals, heat and loose hydrogen molecules can lead to hydrogen embrittlement.
If heat is involved, dish soap is all I would want to use.
