This thread is more of a vent for me than anything. I am so sick and tired of all the oil and additive companies talking about how great their products are and how everyone else's products are crap. One is example is AMSOIL saying that their fuel stabilizer is the best but Stabil's doesn't work and vice versa. Stihl says that their pre-mixed fuel is made specific for their saws and others don't work properly in Stihls. Basically everyone says their products work but other companies products don't work as well or even damage your equipment. Is there any place that a consumer can go to see what actually works? I think that the pre-mixed fuels are making a difference in our saws and blowers, but my partner thinks that adding ethanol treatment does the trick too. Who's right? I like Stabil's diesel fuel treatment but a buddy of mine says it can damage the engine..... he's an AMSOIL dealer. And then there's bar oil.....

So who in the hell are you supposed to believe? Are there any good websites out there that covers stuff like this that doesn't try and sell you stuff? It's just so frustrating trying to make an informed decision.

Oh boy! We haven't had a good oil thread in ages. Paging GASoline71 Gary! I'm gonna have a seat on the couch and watch.

I am not looking to start an oil debate. I have decided that whatever anyone uses, they think is the best. Which makes sense otherwise why would they be using it? So honestly I don't want to know what everyone uses, I am wondering if there is any unbiased info out there? Maybe not.

By the way Skwerl, that is one sweet couch of smiley faces. I didn't realize this thread would be worthy of something like that.

I got it from Butch, thank him. :)

Most of my opinions on oil are based on personal experiences, although some are obviously influenced by reading stuff on the forums. Brendon has a chart from some study on diesel additives to replace the sulfur lubricant lost when the EPA required almost all of it removed from fuel. I use a splash of cheap Wal Mart two cycle oil in my diesel fuel, works great and my injectors are quieter now.

I saw that chart that you are speaking of but from what I remember it was like reading a different language. I am too uneducated on the subject. I need something titled "Lubes for Dummies".

Hey! Get back on topic! I think the last thing this forum needs is another smiley face couch thread. We need more "which oil should I use " threads.

Stihl full synthetic in premium gas... nough said.. Is has a stabilizer in it anyway. All my maintenance dropped cost wise once I did that. And I mean night and day. With ethanol.

I also settled on the Stihl synthetic (white bottle) and premium gas. Zero fuel related issues in years. My stuff just works. I'm still running ported saws that I got almost a decade ago and they still run like new.

I've always used husky oil in the grey and blue bottle. Why? Because its readily available at my saw dealer which is on my way to my yard in the mornings. Is it the best? I don't know. Have I ever had any fuel or cylinder issues? No. So ill continue to use it. It works for my saws, so I haven't felt compelled to go out of my way to buy another brand.

I ran amsoil dominator in my saws for a few months way back when. Smelled good. Didn't wear my rings.

?

I use the JASO (Japanese automotive standards organization) system of rating 2 stroke oils, purchasing FC and the one FD rated that I have found (highest of the high). I believe that Stihl Ultra has a lower rating, FB, but when you get into the better grades, the main difference is the degree of detergency. There is some question whether chainsaws have a similar requirement for detergency, compared to other 2 stroke engines, like on bikes. The lower ratings, aside from detergency, differentiate more between lubrication against friction, smoke, and torque, etc. A FB rated oil may smoke more than a FC one, among possible other things. The JASO is pretty much the world standard now, over API (American petroleum institute), which eventually was considered an insufficient rating system. The JASO system also differentiates between 2 and 4 stroke in their classifications. Until I know more about to what degree the ratings are applicable to saws, I stick with the highest rated. The rating is usually on the container.

JASO FA
Original spec established regulating lubricity, detergency, initial torque, exhaust smoke and exhaust system blocking.
JASO FB
Increased lubricity, detergency, exhaust smoke and exhaust system blocking requirements over FA.
JASO FC
Lubricity and initial torque requirements same as FB, however far higher detergency, exhaust smoke and exhaust system blocking requirements over FB.
JASO FD
Same as FC with far higher detergency requirement.

Usually whatever the stuff is TSC sells in the little 6 packs .Could be Stihl branded oil just depends where I'm at when I run out of it .Can't say as I've ever had a problem with either .

Jay.... See, now that's something we should have here.

However that doesn't really get to the issue of different additives, like diesel treatments and ethanol treatments (Seafoam, etc).

I don't know if the oil brands are obligated to put it on or not, it's on pretty much everything here, but maybe not so much the oils put out by the saw makers....?

I suppose if a person really researched it you might be able to find a rating .Google maybe .

More times on a forum oil is like brands of saws --he said she said .
