When I went to North Dakota to teach in 1991, I was introduced to the game of ice hockey as the major sport in the state. I knew few of the "rules" if such things really exist! I soon learned to like watching a good game. I just happened to be at a 2 year college that was either champion or runner up in, I believe, at least 17 of the 38 years that the Junior College Athletic Assn. held a tournament. There was a long tradition for the area at all levels from Pee-Wee hockey (about age 4 I think) up through the UND Sioux who were perennial players in the Frozen Four. This community was located 12 miles from Canada and had a good enough reputation to attract many player from there and also several each year from European countries as well.
In the past several weeks, I have become a rabid fan again for a couple of reasons. The head coach and his assistant of the US Paraolympic hockey team were the high school math teacher/hockey coach and one of his players when we were in the Bottineau, ND area. As you may know, they won the Gold in Beijing again this year, again defeating Canada. Their combined goals from games with Canada (2), China. and Korea were US 29 - Opponents 1. I think I am right on those numbers, if not I shorted the US a few.
Currently the Dakota College at Bottineau team is in the ACHAM 2(?) play offs. They have defeated Trine University (IN), student population 4998, Ohio State sp 66,444, and U Mass sp 28,635 (sp according to Google). This from a school that had about 350 students when I taught there but has exploded to 898 students in recent years. They will now play in the Semi-finals tomorrow against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles.
The school started as the ND School of Forestry in 1905. The team is the Lumberjacks. To top it off the Lady Jacks hockey team has won the first game at their national tournament as have the Lady Jacks Basket ball team at theirs. Never question a small group of tree people from the Northern border of ND.
Sorry for the length of this. I am a little wound up tonight!!

That's cool. I played hockey so can relate. North Dakota School of Forestry isn't exactly how I think of a forestry school location. Lol.

There "trees are all hooked to long wires which makes yarding much easier!!! Actually, it was put into the state constitution before the Biltmore School was founded. It was finally funded in 1905 by local business men.

Our village used to clear a spot in the park and flood it for skating every winter...and so the idea was born to go play hockey.
Turned out to be more like chase the puck with sticks while beating the *uck out of each other.

Just like on tv......lol.

I moved to Minnesota in '72 so I grew up in the hockey realm...it was fun but I have scars from it. We didn't have face shields in the early days. Damn near every park had an ice rink and warming hut. They would only cancel the games if it was -10 f degrees or lower.

A guy I work with coaches junior hockey. 1 game suspension for Gross Misconduct (checking from behind) and 5 game suspension if the ref hears you call an opponent a pussy. Makes sense, eh?

I was casual friends with a guy named Richey who was on the Rangers farm team. I can’t remember his last name but they altered it to sound more Russian. His position was that of a fighter. He said he was instructed on a great many occasions to pummel the competition to get the crowd worked up.

No, I'm referring to something we called " good sportsmanship" back in the day.

Well, I never thought someone would find risking concussion/spinal injury as less of an offense then having someone's "feelings" possibly (not likely) be hurt by a slang word, but there you have it.

I'm raised in Karate where you bow politely before kicking the shit out of each other.
I'm also part of "the rest of the World" and it ain't obvious to me.

I can see where some of your interactions go south whether intentional or not.
I'm going to avoid future interactions with you when I can. I thought I'd give it a try but it doesn't feel like something I'm interested in pursuing any further. I get a terrible vibe from you but don't take it personal, its my problem.

Is that meant for me or did Knothead pull his usual stunt and deleted an idiotic post, he had made.
If for me, may I suggest the ignore button.

It was meant for Stig. I didn't check back with this thread for almost a month due to the shame I feel when I'm too honest with somebody. I thought I'd relate something I learned about local hockey that might generate a laugh or two. Instead I had to hear about how high somebody can kick. Again.

Ignore button pushed.

Cool with me.
Was about polite, good sportsmanship, not high kicks, actually.
Guess I'm too woke for you 🤣
