I hate to say it, but I think it's time to retire or rebuild my New Tribe saddle after 17 years. Although it's aged, everything is still in good shape. Only thing I have had to replace are the leg pads. Both flippers on the stainless clips broke years ago, but there are plenty of rings to hang accessories on so it never bothered me.

So, to commend Tom Ness and his workmanship on one of the first generation work saddles, my hats off to you. That green belt never let me down, has been worked almost every day and the most comfortable saddle I've ever worn. Might be one for New Tribes antique shelf.

Some of you are probably saying, "What the hell! 17 years?.... :D.... Yeeeep !

Anybody ever own and work one that long ?

Ive had my New Tribe since the mid 90's as well, but as of late it is seldom used. It still looks brand new. The only thing Ive used it for in the last 7-8 years is for hunting from an elevated tree stand.

That would be 1995 vintage, if I have it right...so my custom Ness/New Tribe is one year younger than yours, Greg. Of course, my climbing work isn't close to as frequent as yours, but I have to agree, this has been an amazingly sturdy AND comfortable saddle. Mine has years left in it. I usually go for my Sequoia these days, but for a long SRT climb, I still think the New Tribe has no equal.

Your about right Burnham. I wasn't sure what year I bought it..but now that you mention it. I became a senior for the city back in late 94 and I had the saddle before that, So it might be a year or two older. Anyway, it dates back there a tad...

Wow!

My NT is going on 6+. Still looks good as new. I was worrying that I should replace it, because of age. But I can't get myself too as it's damned near perfect still.

Your going to maybe laugh at this, but in the UK legislation dictates that all farbric items ;ropes, slings, harnesses etc are all removed from service after 5 years from date of first use. It's all liability driven so your probably going to be lumbered with it next :(
Anyone know if new tribe harnesseS are c.e. approved? Would love to try the nikosi out

Tophopper have you tried the TA saddle yet?

jp:D

I have not. Ive been busy with other projects at work the past few weeks and haven't even put a saddle on in almost a month. Today we had an in house training day, I brought the TA with thinking I may get a chance today, but it didn't happen. I have 2 days of training at the end of the week scheduled, so my plan is to put my other projects on hold and spend some time in production tomorrow and Wednesday. I'm looking forward to it, just waiting for the right opportunity.
Hows the Treemotion treating ya? Still happy with the trade? I must admit, the TM is nice, but even after owning one for a few years, I think they're over-hyped.
I hope your enjoying it more than I did.

Yeah I like the saddle, really comfortable. It does seem to get loose after climbing in it for a few hours but I think I may just need to adjust. Yup, they are pretty hyped up not a huge difference between the sequoia and they are definitely overpriced IMO.

I feel NewTribe saddles are more then fairly priced! I would have no problem paying the 200 $ for another Tengu! and if people are saying that their old NewTribes similar to the ProGear II are lasting more then 10 years then $245 aint bad at all. In fact I consider that a steal!

yes I hear you! after discovering the newtribe, I have much less desire for one of those "high tech athletic" saddles. I have a butterfly II that was a gift about 6 years ago and is still holding strong, but I tend to lean for my newtribe more and more.

When you get a product that will survive daily abuse & still carry you safely around a tree year after year it's not expensive IMHO.

thats an excellent point, my point was that I have found new tribe to be superior in comfort, durability and safety (for me) at a fraction of the cost compared to many saddles.

I won't go onto another saddle, after the newtribe.

I mean, look at all these new fangled high dollar saddles, with recalls, bridges snapping, rings...are lives are on the line. Duh.

well Willie, I bought a Pro Gear for my guy, he tried it today and said he really likes it... Me and the other hand ? They were pretty much giving away their old saddles similar to my old one for 105.00... I said, "Holly Cow, I'll take it. I tried it on , fit a little snug, but I could live with it unless I gained twenty pounds in the ass. So I threw it on the pile of things to buy and was ready to check out.

Now mind you, no one working there had seen a Ness saddle walk in that old except for Sophia and it was a little fuzzy to her also. Barbra said my saddle was a small because of the green material around the loops that attach to the Delta. Hmmmm .. I don't think they color coded back than...so who knows what size it was. Anyway, I happen to be talking about the D's and where they should sit on the hips when I got to thinking about the saddle I was going to purchase. Tried it back on and guess what, D's sat to far back on this so called small saddle. If my old saddle was a small and the new one was a small, a big question mark appeared above every ones heads. My old saddle the D's where perfect and their mediums, D's where way to far forward. So now the concern was in the production of sizes and when did that change....So much for walking in buying a saddle and walking out....lol

I ended up having them customize a saddle for me. Swapping out bridges, old style leg section , and adding my own snaps to the belt. I am using the Nikosi belt section though. I'm also thinking of having them rotate the soft loop on the right side aim back rather then forward. They'll have to sew it up. Wont be ready for a week.

A classic exampe of why New Tribe is the cat's pajamas for working with the customer so we get what we want. Can you imagine one of those $500 saddle manufacturers doing custom work day in and day out?

Me neither :).
