IMO if the tree is dangerous enough to need a cable then removal is often a better option. When I worked for Davey they sold an awful lot of cable work on trees that didn't need it and had no major structural defects. We put a lot of hardware into perfectly healthy trees.
I think it depends on the area. We don't see enough snow and ice around here. But when we do have ice it usually results in catastrophic failures, that IMO could have been prevented with proper pruning and support cables.
For what it's worth- we ended up buying a Dewalt battery powered grinder that uses the same 20v Max batteries as our drill. It takes the grinder about 2 seconds to get through a piece of 3/8 EHS.
