Keep them clean, well maintained and properly adjusted. A good pair will cut right through the entire cable in one clean cut. We also use the rigguy kits and to date havent had any problems.
Some times if I don't get it far enough back in the jaws I have to make a second cut but no problem with rigguy. I have 2 3/8 cables to install this week. One good thing is the batteries never die
Even tried a cut off wheel on a cordless drill.......pain in the ass!
Just send me the bolt cutters, I'll haul them heavy SOBs up, and be done with it. Just dont throw them out of the tree as tempting as it may be. Lower them back down.
Pain in the ass? How? It takes all of about 3 seconds to use a cutoff wheel. I have the Felco C9, and it is faster and takes less energy to use the cut off wheel to cut through the entire cable then it is to use the C9's to cut a single strand.
Oh, you said cordless drill with a cutoff wheel. Sorry I just saw that. Yeah that would suck, angle grinder all the way.
Some 30 years ago we build a pipe rack for the pipe fitters made of 30 foot class 1 southern yellow pine poles with double crossarms and stretched 3/4" EHS guy wire .
It was dead ended on every cross arm with preforms that were 4 feet long and took a crowbar to wrap them .I cut that chit with a torch .They hung 10" pipe on that thing both sides .That's were I set the outrigger down on my buddys' foot .Could have turned out bad but luckily it just cut the top of his Redwing boot .Learned a lesson over that ,always know where the help is before you make a move .
Most times I will put one handle in a crotch and steady the cable with one hand and push the handle gently with my free hand. Pretty easy cut with that technique.
Kudos offers a lot of options in this type of product, including some battery powered models that look really nice. Real costly, though.
Here's a link to a supplier of a similar product, cost is $300...not cheap, but not out of the question. Like Al said, there are others 5 times as much, and up.
The only problem might be the rating on that one. Seems every pump or ratchet type I have looked up is not rated for steel cable. Geared more for softer like aluminum. The ones Willie shows are rated for the harder cable. They (linesmen) use them for the guys in the industry. Always thought about trying a fiberglass handled pair like what Willie has just to help with the weight. FarWest Cutters
