97 7.3 powerstroke. 75,000 miles. Hard start this morning. Not extremely cold. Through the day I would turn the key to glow the truck to start it. Check engine light would come on, rapid clicking from under the hood, then check engine light would go off, wait to start light would come on, truck would start. Opened the hood just now and the clicking was coming from relay # 1 in the fuse box under the hood on the drivers side. Wiggled the relay, problem solved. No check engine, no rapid clicking, check engine light illuminates like normal. what is relay #1 in that box?

It's fixed for now. But I always like to know what is what and how things work, that way it gives me building blocks in the future for diagnosis. Problem is solved, for the moment. I mean, wiggling the relay did the trick today, but based on experience, it might rear its head again and.need replaced.

Of course...I'm just haveing a little fun at your expense. You definitely want to run it down, those things seem to always choose the most inopportune time to go completely out on us.

I think you'll find that's the glow plug & plug timer relay. Sounds like the socket is dirty; spray some contact cleaner in there, and then some dialectric grease to keep it from oxidizing. :)

Oh B I knew you were razzin my berries. I'm a stress bomb today. Pintle hook stolen off my chip truck, which slowed my roll big time this morning, did a NASTY removal today that rattled my cage, chipper batteries went dead, had an abs light come on in my truck, this starting/relay issue all day, and a leaking fuel tank on the chip truck reared its head today. I keep my gear in tip top shape but today it wanted to just crumble on me. I'll quit ranting. I'm just aggravated. In the dead of winter, I cringe at these things. I'm making money this winter, but I don't have much wiggle room.

Ill bet you are right.

Just changed my glow plug solenoid two weeks ago, same truck. Worked wonders. Looks just like a starter solenoid on top of the motor usually under the cover for the fuel filter to the left. I also( which sucked ) changed out the valve cover gaskets as the connection to the injectors usually faults at the harness here. Truck runs great now, just wish I hadn't put a rock through the pass. Side window today.

Ya, I have gotten better over the years at just pushing ahead and shaking bad days off, but my human side still kicks in sometimes and it gets to me. Fortunately I have no catastrophic issues at hand. Just a pile of small headaches. On the bad days, I sometimes say to myself, "somewhere out there, a climber fell 60 feet out of a tree today".....

Lately, when I have a bad day, I think of the tsunami, as if to look out the window and see a huge wall of water with houses and stuff rushing in. Somehow, I feel a bit better.
