Seems Halloween has been waning in popularity over the last several years. I haven't turned my light on for trick-or-treaters for about 5 years, and never had more than 2-3 kids in the three years prior to that.

Another sign that Halloween isn't widely celebrated any more is when the candy goes on sale three days BEFORE Halloween. I just got back from the grocery store and they had all Halloween candy on sale for half price (buy one get one free).

I also noticed the pumpkin patch at the local megachurch was already gone this morning. They didn't even set it up until last week.

Still a big event here. And you should go to Salem MA some time. ;)
I guess it is here because the whole town gets into it. The housing and population is so spread out here that town is where you go with the kiddos. Businesses stay open late and hand out candy. Nice promo for them. The small amount of town housing decorates and they station PO PO to keep traffic slow. Help everyone cross the street. Mostly our sheriff volunteers at the cross walks. Kids have a blast.
Candy went on sale today I believe. That is just retail the way it is now. Trying to clear the shelves for the next seasons items. Thanksgiving and Christmas. Remember that most of retails profits for the year are made between Thanksgiving and Christmas. So after Halloween, the crunch is really on.

It seems kids don't walk the neighborhood anymore. They set up things at some of the school parking lots here and kids just walk from trunk to trunk getting candy.

LAME!

Greg and I TP'd Cody's neighbors house with Cody's mom. She does it every year and the kid living there thinks it's some kids messing with him. He's got 12 rolls hanging over his driveway.

Never did it when I was a kid, I'm a late bloomer on that too.

Just went to the market and got more candy as my wife accidentally ate the other...

We never have any .Then again I don't imagine many youngsters would care to walk back a 550 foot tree lined driveway in the pitch dark. Besides that they would think I'm the "boogie man " if they ever saw me .

When I was up visiting in MA, we talked to a shop guy in Mayer and he mentioned Salem is "interesting" to say the least during Halloween.

Halloween is still big here. I'll be escorting Cleopatra Queen of all Egypt on Harrison Blvd. in the North end of town. Last year there were two separate houses putting on stage shows of Michael Jackson's Thriller and another house with a castle and a dragon that breathed fire.

Charlette (as Paul Bunyan) scored two full bags of candy tonight. That should hold her for awhile.

A cowgirl and a princess showed up here yesterday evening. (Friends' little girls) That will probably be the extent of my trick or treaters. Living on a busy street with no sidewalks and having no small children living in the immediate neighborhood tends to keep the numbers low.........And since this Oct.31st falls on a Sunday I won't be home until about 8:30

Pretty dang cool you guys.
That one house Brian sure went through a lot of prep to do all the ones they did.
Darin, that is awesome how they got that together. Looks like everyone had great fun with the performance.

Halloween may be waning in popularity in the US, but on the other hand, it has somehow made it's way over here.

For some reason, we now celebrate Halloween.
Instigated and promoted by those who sell pumpkins and costumes of course, but now even the state religion ( yes, we have an official state religion here in commieland, in the year 2010:|:) has embraced it.

I think that is mainly because the'll embrace anything that can lure a few more kids into visiting their local church, but still.

I wish you guys would put a leash on your holidays and keep them at home: first Valentine's day, now Halloween.
We'll probably be celebrating the 4th of july soon.

I'll let you know. The Historic District in Hillsborough is the scene of massive trick or treating (kids) every Halloween. It's become the kids version of downtown Chapel Hill which they close to traffic about 6:00P and 1000's of college students and adults converge on Franklin Street... there's always trouble. I haven't been to either in a while but I think I'll go exploring tonight.

I know that in the last decade the trend around here is to carpool and hit big, kid friendly, safe neighborhoods. Several communities now block off their entrances to anyone but residents to prevent it. I'm not sure how I feel about either of those developments.

Salem is awesome.

We had a few day trip there when I was in seventh or eighth grade. We had tours through cemeteries, around town, it was a good time.

I'd like to go there now that I'm a bit older.
