How much lift in pounds can you get out of a GRCS with the normal crank handle? We have cranked pretty hard in the past and I see wesspur says 3000 pounds. I never felt like we were getting that much so what say ye all?

Here is Harken's manual for the 46. Page 3 lists the max rated load at 2866#. That's a bit of weight for sure. Mine's a 48, but I don't know that it is any stronger. I hope I don't ever need to lift 3000#, or f I do, I'll try to gear it down by adding a redirect or double it back for 2:1.

The number of the winch designates the MA so with a 48 if you pull the handle with 100 lbs force you should get 4800 out minus frictional losses.

The rumor around the campfire is that the 48 was built specifically for Greg Good and is not available to the mass market. Sense Greg started making the GRCS he has become the single largest consumer of Harken winches in the world. I have a few friends who sail with him out on Pewaukee lake so that's the rumor.

That's good input, Rajan. I didn't know the market for the GRCS was nearly that big ... there's A LOT of sail boats out there!

Harken doesn't list a "48". Here's a link to their list: Harken Performa™ winches. Could it have been discontinued?

I'm not sure. Greg told me at the comp in Birmingham when Carl and I saw him that the new one is a 46:1 power ratio, and of course its spool is longer. He said Harken had discontinued the 46 and so he built several GRCS units using a 48. He said he wished he'd saved one for himself.

For seven grand you could also get a hell of an endless line wire rope puller, or a couple. They might even chrome them for you.

That's what's amazing, Jay. When I first got mine, Mauri Pro had a 48 just like it for (I wanna say) $2100. The whole GRCS set-up was only $2500 + a little more for the drill driver and the visor. Of course Greg's probably buying enough at a time to get a significant discount.

I'm not positive, Eric, but I believe, judging from the specs, that there is a way to make the handle turn the drum directly. In other words, every turn of the handle equals one turn of the spool. The highest power ratios seem to be about what you'd get with the length of the winch handle alone, with no gear reduction.

Here's a chart of the specs on a bunch of winches. It appears that a few of the very smallest--and largest--do have a 1-1 "direct drive" ratio.
