Sorry to disappoint -40 is the same on both scales! Didn't you get John's memo (in US/English only)? No that was w/o a winchill!

The coldest I remember here was -54C. I do remember Marlene crying as we counted stuff, her tears froze mid-cheek!

Firefighters spray water at houses to put the fire out and cut holes in the roof to allow the smoke and super heated gas to escape. They are there to keep the fire from spreading and to save lives. Either by water or by flame, the house is screwed the majority of the time. Complaining that they don't save structures is silly as that's not a reasonable expectation.

I actually agree.

I can't believe I just said that.

That's interesting that -40F = -40C. I didn't know that.

What was identified as the start of your fire, and was it the same in the other 3 houses?

The last one was electrical, the one before that was a heater (central stove) if I remember correctly!

We have lots of volunteer fire departments. They even have competitions where one guy plays a bugle and the rest all go rushing out like they are attacking Injuns. I know that the only reason that a lot of guys volunteer is because they get free sake payed for by the town at their monthly parties. I've seen them in action a couple times at real fires, it is pretty much just a calamity. The fire might be completely extinguished for forty five minutes, but invariably there will be at least one straggler rushing up in a truck with lights and siren blazing. Everybody looks around like where is the fire?
