Drone for Christmas

Setting a throw line would suck, based on my drone experience. If the crotch is too tight to throw/launch a bag, it'll be tough to fly a drone through.

Thanks lumberjack - your videos are amazing - you obviously know what you are doing. Of course, you're right - it would suck in many ways, but be a bonus for a few.

Pros for me:
Possibility to inspect TIP (if using live camera).
Possible method for gaining isolation at TIP (if wanted).

Cons
Cold (battery depletion)
Wind
Possible damage to drone from tree/foliage.
Possible damage to property.
Possibility of drone getting stuck/lost and having to retrieve it.
Friction from line being set.

I'm still going to pursue the idea though. This video gives me hope (and is the first video I've seen of a drone doing this).

Ideally for a line setting purpose we'd look for compact, protected (from rotors), precise, and a bit of power. I know you can spend thousands on these things (in reality - that's probably what it would cost).

This was my thought, use an extra channel to drop the weight, like a plane or heli dropping a skydiver/smokebomb/comfetti/etc. I cannot think of a tree that I was trying to set a line where this would have been the easiest way, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

A throw/line could be reeled/spooled off from a drone. This might have some advantages over a (remote or otherwise) 'payload drop' system (which could be done) as the reel/spool is let out (depending on the tension/friction/weight) behind the drone on the line. I worry that the weight of the throw weight itself is often not enough to 'pull' the weight back to the ground (and it is often the momentum from the throw that helps it come right back down to the ground, despite the gained friction from the TIP on the line). I see the possibility of eliminating the throw weight altogether from this system as kinda cool. If the throw/line could auto feed itself out under certain tension (past the friction of the TIP for instance) then you wouldn't even need to 'drag' the line though (that friction wouldn't even matter). Ideally - you could bring the drone straight back down after passing the TIP - and it SHOULD come down, ha ha.

True - few applications where we'd need a drone where the apta, big shot, throw, ect couldn't already get us. Still - we could have a bit of fun figuring it out. Now where did I put that $1000...
