Blade Touch up

Anyone use one of these? I bought one last night, used it on my dulled chipper blades this morning, little sucker worked great!

Yup, been using those for years for touch ups between sharpenings. Works good.

There is a V of 2 sharpening stones, on the left in the pic. Just slide over the blade, and no need to take anything apart. Around $15.

I used to use them. I wasn't sure if it was worth the effort. (guys love chipping stuff other than wood) It does keep the blade touched up, though I think it does put a different angle on the face of the knife.
 
One of the guys I work with does his with one of those every time he lubes it.
 
By "change the angle" you go from a single bevel edge to a two bevel edge. The first bevel is now 2 angles instead of one (a chamfer then a bevel), the second bevel is quite small, but it forms on the "face" of the blade (faces the wood) and angles away from the wood. Which is counter intuitive for good reason.

It's equivalent to sharpening a chisel on both sides of the cutting edge.

I'd rather use an angle grinder.
 
Back in my chipping daze I used that sharpener once a day, sometimes twice. I'm not sure but I think there are superior and inferior models of that thing. The wal mart version might not last as long.

They'll last way longer if you don't use them on dull blades. Just use them to touch up already sharp edges.

According to my Morbark owner's manual, the two bevel edge "has increased knife life up to three times and has reduced the amount of steel the grinder takes off the knife."

And they are talking about sharpening both sides of the same edge?
 
:O:That just seems wrong, on a disc chipper especially. A drum chipper could angle the blades outward slightly and it'd be fine I'd guess.
 
My Morbark is a drum, but I've used that gizmo on the Bandit disc and it works just dandy.
 
I'll stick with my wet grinder ... set of four double sided in 20 minutes. And of course have three sets handy ;) So that would be six times changed before I run out of blades :)
 
This gadget is for daily touch-ups. It takes about a minute to do both knives. Open up the hood, a few quick passes with the sharpener, close it up and you're done. Ba da bing!

I send them to a shop in Georgia for "real" sharpening.
 
I do. If they are bad enough to send to a machine shop, then that's where they have to go. I have no one local here that can do them. Steve gave me the name of a guy where he is at and I will have him do it if that is necessary. My wet grinder is not perfect, but it does a great job.
