First 2 pictures is albizzia. They may not look big or tall in the picture, but my clinometer measured these at 130 ft., but the very tops could not fit in the frame of my 28mm lens. The taller ones were further down the road. Trunks are about 3 ft. diameter.

Anyone want to come down and cut and chip the bigger trees for $700 each, I'll supply chipper and trucks but no labor, you are hired if I get the bid.

Last 3 pictures are monkeypod. ALL the branches you are looking at is from one tree in the back yard of a long time customer. This is one of the biggest monkeypod trees on the island, about 80 ft. tall with a canopy spread about 250 ft. The branches in the 2nd monkeypod picture, where they come out of the main trunk are about 3 ft. in diameter. This would easily be a $50K removal, but I could not see taking down such a magnificent specimen.

Bait and Switch might apply if there were no conditions.
On each of those 'great' prices there is a "some restrictions may apply"...

WWB said what I reckon is going on.

Having said that though... From what I understand about the US and the obsession with suing each other, perhaps they wouldn't get away with it.
Australia seems to be following quite closely...

I'm a little dumb about this stuff ,never saw a monkey pod tree .That thing goes hither and yon .So in my opinion does a live oak .How in the world can anybody ever cut lumber out of that stuff ?:?

I've seen monkey pod in table tops ,bar tops etc .It was like two feet wide and had a finish like polished glass .Beautiful stuff . They used live oak for old square rigger sailing ships like the USS Constituion .How in the world did they do it .?

I definitely wasn't trying to justify it as fair.
Just suggest an angle as to how someone in this industry can get away with advertising in this way. :)

I say we call them up, ask them to come out and give us an estimate on a big tree or two, and ask to see proof of insurance. Then tell INS and OSHA when they show up to do the work. One of the two will probably fine the crap out of them. I havent seen them around, but were alot of the number tabs torn of at the bottom? Cory- Could TW be involved?

IMO, the real pros will benefit from companies like this in the long run. It's a fairly safe assumption that this company isn't real good at tree work (if they were, they would know enough to not give a flat rate no matter how difficult or dangerous). So they're gonna go out there and screw the pooch on a few jobs, piss off a lot of customers, and pretty soon they'll either learn to do the job right or get out of the business. Either way, they're just making us pros look good by comparison.

You're absolutely right, it can smart a little in the short run though.

My local competitor (such as he is) is a spike on a trim hack. I've made more money BECAUSE of him, than I've lost.

Oh, forgot about him. He's a few towns away, and yeah... locked up on a DUI.

I was talking about Mr. Spike it here in town.

Albizia saman= Monkey Pod bwdik?

Ur actually correct there ptptree. They changed the monkey pod taxonomy from Samanea samans to Albizia samans. The 'albizias' that Koa man is talking about are Falcataria moluccana, MUCH different animal.

Thanks for the clarification treesandsurf. I think people who say that chit " any tree for $700 " drag the industry down for sure. We will survive.

Hahaha.

Cory, my neighbor stumbled across the "Any tall tree for 700..." ad, from the same company. She thinks she found it in her mailbox but couldn't remember. The ad looked childish. It said...."This doesn't include taking away the crown, we can chip the crown onto the ground for no charge, what we are saying is we can take away the chips for a little extra money."

Sounded professional.

Wow, pretty large area they are trying to cover!!

The more I thought about it, the less the ad concerned me cuz it is so dumb.

On a much smaller scale, I've been trying to come up with standardised pricing for shrub / hedge trimming for 2 years now.
It just makes sense that anybody who hopes to franchise will eventually need a 'system'. Why is that so bad ?
A guy tried that with trash hauling 20 years ago >>>
You might recognize the name Waste Management ?
If he loses his ass, too bad. But personally, I admire somebody that's willing to attempt to standardised pricing.
