Oh, I guess I have one more question. If #s 1-3 are affirmative, then could *I* stay in business?

I dunno, but I wouldn't get out of bed for what they're probably making after expenses.

I could remove "average" trees here for $700 per including stump, including debris removal (excluding raking), assuming I was already working in their neighborhood.

Don't think I'd advertise that way though.

We have the same thing here, except their price is $250. And it's a legitimate (or at least legitimate appearing), large company with their own cranes, mulch recycling yard with tub grinder, etc. In fact I got one of their fliers on my door last week, I'll take a picture of it for you.

$25.00 to clean a palm? Times are tough here also but $ 25.00 for a palm, no way.No Way Just to clean it and leave the mess is more than that. :what:

And you guys wonder why I'm giving myself away for $75 per hour (or less) and still can't get any work. :(

We need some more illegal Mexicans to work for peanuts under the table and stimulate the economy. And then we need to make the WC laws stricter and force everybody to pay an additional $60 per $100 of payroll for nonexistant coverage with no exceptions.

It could be a tragic misunderstanding of what types of nasty jobs are out there... But with that kind of advertising, I'd reckon they're coming from a different angle.

Until the job is agreed on, the '$700' contractor has no obligation to do the job:
Sorry! Can't do it.
Nor offer quote the job at a lower price ;)
Yes, I can do you $250 job for $700 as advertised. Fool. :whine: $$$$

Another strategy which I've seen a large overseas company do.
We will run our business in the new country at a loss, so we can undercut all other contractors until they are broke. We will use our successful overseas company to back our new branch for say, 15 years, by which time we should have a stranglehold on the market
And thus the 'ridiculously' cheap job rate is created.

Yeh $25 is a definite no-way. I guess just having the opportunity to look at the job is half the work... I'd say that '*' has something to do with that. That flier is simply so they can be in contact with potential clients... nothing else.

I get really nervous when I see a company doing more than one professional service. Why paint houses, unless you're not very good at trees.

Landscapers around here, they do it all. It's like they can't put all their effort into one thing, so instead of doing one job the right way, they do 10 jobs halfassed.

Or it might be that they don't have one particular skillset that can provide them with enough income, so they do whatever they can in order to make a living.

If they got a call and went to the potential customer's house, and upon seeing the tree said, "Sorry, this just isn't ANY tree, so for a job like this, we have to charge more", there is the still the chance that they'll get hired. The customer may not want to go to the trouble of looking further for someone who might want a higher fee than what is in front of them. It's an old trick, sort of like the fine print at the bottom of the page, but there's no page.

If the customer dislikes the scam and tells them to take a hike, or the new asking fee is higher than they want to pay, the "company" probably lost less than what would have been the case if they had done the big tree at their advertised price....the loss a little of their time. It seems like there is at least more potential than never getting a call in the first place, having used legitimate advertising. :/:

I guess the next time I get an all day $1800+ removal, I should have them do it and pocket the difference:|:

Clever, but the first time they break something they're gonna walk..

At the point of changing price it has become "Bait and Switch" ... illegal ...

Reading the definition of "Bait and Switch", it seems different from the situation I outlined. When a different item is substituted in place of the one advertised, or when essential parts are left out that also need to be purchased, it's the illegal, BaS. Not sure that would apply here. :?

It might be a legal scam.

Sorry Butch. It was an attempt at humor. BBS suggested those types "walk", you agreed, I said they"run".

I'll go sit in the corner now.:)

I'm not quite awake yet...

Hmm, I wonder if they would work in Hawaii if I paid the airfare and provided housing. I just bid a job to remove 35 large albizzia trees ranging in height 130 to 177 ft. They are on a hillside across the road from a townhouse complex, so nothing to get damaged as long as they climb up at least 150 ft. on the tall ones before cutting. I'll provide the chipper and chip trucks, since their ad said they would also chip the debris.
