Until that Zen runs into the third or fourth chain and you've found out somebody just 'borrowed you're last box of files.

Jay, are there many talented climbers in Japan?

Chris, I only know of one full time climber in the country, and have worked with him once. I would say that he is talented, and pretty much entirely self taught. He works for a big outfit, but freelances now and then. Just very rare opportunities to learn climbing here, so talent rarely can get developed.

I got to thinking about all this .My favorite way to file is sit on a 5 gallon bucket behind my truck .Put the bar up on the tail gate which has plastic on it and it protects the truck and the chain . The saw bar is at a higher level and angled up from the engine with it between my legs and I go left right left over the bar .Slick as a whistle . Now just how in the world would do that with a 60" bar ? You'd have to have an assistant holding the damned bar up or a crane .

I only enjoy filing when my file slips like a banana peel across the tooth and I run my index finger across the chain and start gushing blood. Y'all know exactly what Im talking about.

Do you guys ever wonder how many chains you've sharpened? I started sharpening saws in 1989 and think its got to be up in the thousands of times by now.

I didn't even know you could file a chain until maybe '71-72 .Those old farmers usually took them to the saw shop which in reality was just the local IH or John Deere dealer .Sold lawn mowers too .

The biggest bar I work with (not really often) is a 44" on a 3120 XP. The chain is full comp. Never tried a skip chain.
I have only one half skip chain. But what is funny, that's a 3/8" hobby for a 16" bar !:what:
It's on a chinese chainsaw Go-On. My dad gave it to me "just in case".

Do you think that a 54" bar and full comp is to much on a 3120? I know chip clearance will be an issue but it will be used for stumping mostly.

I haven't read more than this of this thread, but Holy Smokes!
Full comp is a lot of filing. In my opinion the 3120 can bog out, especially on stumps.
You're gonna find all sorts of schwag in stumps.

I like semi skip. We use 88's and 3120's.

Full comp on nothing more than a 044 with a 24" bar, maybe.
In my little opinion. :)

You can bog about anything if you put enough load on it .It doesn't make any difference if it's a mini Mac or an 084 . Damned big stump will put the test on the best of them .

Ah, the Treehouse! Great thread; I hit metal with my 42" bar/full comp chain and need to replace the chain now as it has no life left in it. Willard pointed out that in a residential setting where foreign objects may likely be encountered, full comp is the better choice cuz it will be easier to file because each tooth will take a smaller hit as there are more teeth to share the load. That makes sense, but other folks still prefer semi or full skip. How is semi on a 24" bar? I've always run full on my Husky 24" bars, but if semi is good on a 24" and it might be good on the 42" bar despite Willards argument, maybe I'll try a roll of semi. I need to buy 100' right away so now would be a good time to enact a change. I work residentially full time.

What say you, Housers?

For what it's worth...Doug Dent has been running simi-skip on his custom cut sawyer crew saws for the last 5-6 years, after decades of full skip use. He reports real good wear, cutting speed, and not so much of a trade-off in sharpening time for field touch-ups as one might expect. Of course, he has a nice Silvey grinder in his shop for most sharpening tasks.

Better add this note...full chisel, no other even considered.

Also fwiw...not many things do I decide to not follow Doug's advice on, but in this I have strayed :). I am a full skip man, 'til the end. My single saving grace may be that I am all the way a full chisel man, too :D.

Well I'm not gonna go full chisel. Matter of fact, B, does anybody east of the Mississippi use full chisel?

I could stick with the full for my 24"ers and buy a loop of semi for the 42". But I feel weird buying a loop insteada making my own, ha. But can't buy a roll of semi cuz this last 42" chain lasted me probably 7 years, only using like 2x/ year.

I reckon what some say, that PNW softwoods are the best match for long bars running full skip, might be so. I have but a thimble full of experience with anything else.

I don't think economics of loop vs. spin your own matters much when you use a chain no more than that, Cory.

Spring for a loop of skip (if you can find it locally) and try it out. My last three rolls have been skip. I still have full comp on my 880 because it is .404 gauge and I cannot buy skip by the loop. I much prefer using the Husky 395 with skip.
