Working in the Wind

This is a thread for sharing stories about working in the wind. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

This video from 2012 shows me losing a small maple top to the wind. I wasn't paying attention when a slight breeze came during the back cut. Fortunately, no harm was done, but it was an eye opener.

Had a small poplar top break over backwards in the wind a few years ago. Nice dent to a gutter. Oops.

Same with a Lombardi poplar. Shitty wood. The top was rigged in self retention with a sling. The wind pushed it back over me and popped off the hinge. The top landed on my back, trapping me against the trunk. Not a big one luckily, but it's still damn heavy.

But in some other ones, the wind helped me to push the tops in the intended lay.
So, it isn't always the bad guy.

My usual cutoff is 25mph, sometimes 30mph depending on the type of work.

I'd guess these gusts were in the 40+ range...
I wouldn't have climbed in that weather but felt pretty good in the bucket

All my climbing is done by hand or with the crane, so it can start to get really sketchy at 25mph+

Especially w/ these srt ropes. I didn't notice much under 20mph while on MRS unless it was a real skinny spindly tree. But srt I feel every little bit the tree moves.
