Woodworking

The picture makes it look thick, should’ve made the rim thinner. Need to make a good bowl gouge. I did this one with just a skew, big no no I’m told.

You've got to be kidding!

That shouldn't be possible.

What you should have done was round over the rim.

That would have made the bowl look better IMO.

Still, Damned good job for a beginner.
If you need some advice about which type bowl gouge to get, PM me.

This is what I used Stig, it’s flat with a radius. Skew, scrapper, I don’t know. I’m too busy doing stuff to learn what I’m doing.

Radius scraper would be my name for it.

So you basically scraped the inside of the bowl.
That can be done, but using an U or V type deep fluted bowl gouge works so much better.
I have an extra one to spare.
PM me and I'll send it to you.
( I'll knock the handle off first, no sense in paying postage for something you can easily make yourself.)

Alternatively, look at this page: http://thompsonlathetools.com/

And, lo and behold, made in the US of A.

No shit, Bob.
Those are way better than anything else you can buy.

I made a gouge lastnite, I’ll post a picture when I get home. Have a few long shank reamers laying around looking for a better home, high speed steel. Seen a few carbide cutters just begging to go to work too.

Recently put some legs on this slab.. going to gift it for Christmas.

Live edge is so cool, good work.

Picture of that gouge Stig.

To be honest Butch I’d rather a tool like Stigs go to a craftsman. I’ll do this a while and then be on to something else, maybe collect butterflies. It would likely be sold at my auction for pennies on the dollar when I’m gone.

Looks good Bob.
You have the right amount of mass in the bottom of the gouge.
Take the groove further back or you'll have issues with it filling up with chips as you cut.
All that cut off wood needs somewhere to go.

Thanks Stig, I didn’t think of that. Back to the grinder it goes.

Always a jug of triple X brain bleach on hand Stephen, case of snake bite, I’ll stick to the coffee tho. Bartenders shouldn’t drink. ;)

Polish the hell out of the inner face of it.
That is the important part of the edge.
The smoother you make it, the better your gouge will cut.
Lots of factory made gouges have marks from the milling in the groove.
If one doesn't polish them out, they'll cut like shit.
