Reference is derived from the term "goose pen tree"...a large hollowed out base, often by fire, with an open catface, which could be enclosed with fencing to create a pen to keep livestock in...often enough it was geese, I suppose...but in the redwood country particularly, even a cow or two.
So today a "goosed out" base is one with a lot of hollow and an opening or two.
