My wife joined Toastmasters a few weeks ago and last night was her first official speech, known as the Icebreaker. She was kind of nervous about it, but apparently she did an incredible job. Here is a portion of the minutes from the meeting:

"Fellow Toastmasters,

We had another great meeting last night with 22 members and 3 guests in attendance...

...and the winners last night were.......

Speaker - Marcy Y. and her Icebreaker. It is very rare that an Icebreaker gets the Blue Ribbon so congrats to Marcy on her excellent speech."

cool. I do public speaking enough that I should probably go to a Toastmasters group for critique one day. :) I know I speak too fast generally, I try to curb that, and enunciate well.

Very cool! My FIL went to Toastmasters for a while, he thought it might make him more like me, I think we are both glad that didn't happen:lol:

Basicly meant to make you feel more at ease introducing yourself and speaking to people. A "how to" at the party icebreaker, then primes you for public speaking. It's really a good club.

I speak in front of groups sometimes. I just wing it. I think the naturalness comes through....the good, bad, and ugly. People do compliment, but usually I never hear from them again. :?

Darn I thought it was a group of people who like toast. I will have to keep searching for my brethren.

You have good reason top be proud Brett.

Same here, I don't do it that often anymore. It helps to practice and condition yourself before speaking to large groups though. I was always comfortable talking to 20 or 30 folks but I nearly choked bigtime once when I had to address a crowd of around 200.

As much as the actual speaking, I'd like to learn how to prepare before a speech. There must be more to it than just being nervous.

The basics:
1. tell them what you are going to tell them. (opening)

2. tell them. (body)

3. tell them what you just told them. (closing)

just get over the nervous part. :D

I have scripted talks that I do and I also 'wing it' depending on the subject at hand.

The only prep I will do is some scanning of data pertaining to the subject if I have been away from it for a while. That and I keep fairly up to date on current events, even if its a headlines only, it can open lots of dialogue with a group.

I also am mindful of gestures and such, watch a politician speak, critique them on their motions, attire and mannerisms, they have WAY more expensive coaches than I will ever afford. :)

I recently had the opportunity for some public speaking, but it wasn't to be. I sawed out the timbers for a TF workshop that was last week. The class was supposed to visit Ted's house for a tour, and then come to the mill for a sawing demo. I had my whole spiel worked out on how to select a log and saw out a quality timber. We waited for an hour before a car showed up. It was Ted. I guess everybody boogied after class. I was actually disappointed.
