There was a demo project ballon yarding harvest on my old ranger district back in the early 1970's, iirc. It worked, but they had numerous problems. Wind was a big factor, shutting the operation down for too much of the time for it to be really considered a viable system. Didn't take much wind, either.

That was before my time with the FS, so I never saw the operation, but I worked the units doing stocking control and stand exams.

Soderberg diod it in AK in the 80's. Worked pretty good actually. Was cheaper than using a Vertol.
