God's country, North Coast
Time for some show and tell. Locations are listed in alphabetical order. Some more, some less, but all along the Mendocino Coast. Enjoy!

These views are from Albion. 14 miles south of Ft. Bragg. Like all towns settled on the Mendocino Coast during the mid 1800s it was a logging town, and the mill was set on the tidal flats at the mouth of the Albion River. It's a campground now. The heights of the ocean bluffs here are just better than 100 feet. That wave breaking over Bull Rock is right out front of Albion Bay.

Thanks, Gerry. I enjoyed those.
Gonna get back there soon.

That is the bridge down by Albion, isn't it?

Alta Mesa

Next is Alta Mesa. A view point along the Mendocino Coast north of Manchester, in a subdivision call 'Irish Beach'. Figure 500 to 600 feet. Except for the coyote brush it's pretty much an unobstructed view. Ft. Bragg is about 45 miles north.

First views are looking north towards Ft. Bragg. Second views are looking south to Point Arena.

How are your rain and fog patterns? Do you get dry, stable summer weather? Morning maritime fog layer part/ all summer?

My neighbors thought that Olympia was sunny, after moving from the Oregon Coast.

Anchor Bay

Next is Anchor Bay. Another port of call located on the Mendocino Coast 4 miles north of the Sonoma County line. Which puts it about 56 miles south of Ft. Bragg. That big white rock sitting off the beach there is called 'Fish Rock'. It's a sea-lion rookery and during mating season the bulls bark all day and night long. You can hear them for miles around. Drive you crazy.

Yeah, Sean, along the Mendo coast we get fog, wind and all the maritime weather. Probably not much different from where you live. Some areas are more protected. Like Anchor Bay, it's referred to as the 'Banana belt' Protected in the lee of Pt. Arena.

Big River

Next in line is Big River. Located 9 miles south of Ft. Bragg at the village of Mendocino. Like at Albion the old mill here sat on the tidal flats. Intersected by Hwy. 1m, on the left looking up river from the mouth, or beach.

Amazing!

Who owns the land in Alta Mesa?

Alta Mesa has been bought and sold 2 times in the last 10 years, Cory. No water, lies in a major view corridor. Coastal commission, permits, studies. Bound to take 5 to 10 years, and a million bugs to get started building.

View looking north across Big River Bay. in the background is Mendocino.

Cavanagh Grade. Less than a mile long section of Highway 1 with a 200 foot elevation drop, between Navarro and Elk. There's 4 view points through this stretch. This is the first on the way down. All different days and times of the year.

Chadburn Gulch

Keeping with the alphabetical listings. The next folder in the archives is Chadburn Gulch. This location along the Mendocino Coast is 12.5 miles north of Ft. Bragg. There are 3 good view points inside of a mile through Chadburn. This is the first.
