The amazing tenacity of a willow

John and I removed 4 willows about 3 or 4 months ago. It wasn’t our native black willow but I’m not sure of the exact species. I always hear about their refusal to die on this forum but when I saw this …….. The stuff is growing from the wood pile ! It’s been split for at least 2 months and it’s still not dead! Most of the pieces looked like this!

I believe they use the cambium to make a cloning gel with. It's ability to keep growing is amazing, I've seen fallen branches grow into trees!

That’s wild!

It would be nice if white oak and American beech would be this aggressive.

My first climb and remove of size was Willow , multi lead (of course) and large .... when down to the stump , elderly next door neighbor came over and told me years back he had stuck a small Willow twig into the ground (cut end no roots) there .... Tree was three to four foot diameter.

Chipping willow brush... broadcasting into a bare field... years later willows galore.

we had alders grow from cut logs as a kid.

I’ve heard the huge salt cedars I’ve been cutting grew from fence posts or the like.

Doesn’t surprise me…cracks have roots in them. So weird.

Yup...I've seen Willow sprout from blocks left in the yard.
That stuff is almost as bad a Trumpet vine.
