I got a call today from Keith at Morbark telling me that someone had called to get parts for my chipper that was stolen 4 years ago. He gave me the name and phone number of the guy who called and sure enough, when I went to check it out, there she was.

Waited an hour for the police to show up, hoping to watch an arrest, only to be told that the statute of limitations had run out. I said, wait a minute, the SOL is 4 years, and it was stolen 10/29/06, so there's still 2 weeks left. The cop just shrugged and said, "That's close enough, tough luck." WTF!

Now I have to wait to hear from the insurance company to see if they'll sell it back to me.

Cops are mostly worthless. Just another example of why it is never a good idea to call the cops for ANYTHING. The lazy and corrupt have ruined it for the 10% of cops who are honest.

The statute of limitations for a grand larceny is only FOUR friggin' YEARS there????

Was it a local cop or the State Police?

Also... the SOL usually BEGINS when the perp is identified; you have x number of years to prosecute once the person responsible is identified.

IT is not up to the cop if it is close enough. Only the states attorney could decide whether to prosecute or not. File a complaint with the commander and tell the local news.

Brian I am calling into question the stat you provide that suggests such a high number is true. I find it hard to believe that more than 4% of cops are honest or even worth a shit. 10 percent? No way.

That cops bad attitude would only encourage more theft. Seems ridiculous. Brett, they didn't even talk with the current user...perhaps he has a whole yard full of stolen stuff?

There is no such thing as "close enough" when it comes to SOL. Im surprised you foolishly bought that.

Id be going over that cop's head with that crap.

Brett, I know that you are a gentle ,loving , God-fearing and law abiding man. Is there evidence that the guy in possession is the thief? If so, I think we should seek a gentle, loving , law avoiding way to kill the bastard.

That would keep me up at night. Chances are that the deed is already done and Brett has his chipper back.

Even if he wasn't the one that stole it, couldn't he be charged with "possession of stolen property"?

2 votes for just going and taking it. Sure, bring along some fire power to show the guy you mean to have your shit back. Maybe some people to back you up.

This could be complicated if Brett was paid out by an insurance company.

I didn't mention how cool it was for the Manufacterer and the parts people to have flagged the chipper as stolen. Corporate America occasionally does give a damn!

As much as I would feel like doing that, probably trying to do it the legal way would be a better idea. It wouldn't be worth getting in a shootout. And remember how it worked out for OJ trying to get his "shit" back.
