Steens Mtn. and Hart Mtn. Antelope Refuge, 2018

M and I have recently returned from another camping and hiking adventure. Another trip to the SE Oregon high desert. I posted a thread about Steens a couple of years ago.

We took a side trip to see the Diamond Craters area, neat volcanic stuff there, and the Peter French round barn historic site...that is a beautiful and unique building.

Back for another visit, and added about a week at the antelope refuge. Hell, if you think Steens Mountain and Frenchglen are way out there in the boonies, then Hart Mountain takes that to another level altogether. 50 miles of rough, dusty, gravel and dirt track from Frenchglen. Not a place you get to without doing so on purpose .

Hart has a sweet pair of hot springs. A special place, for sure.

The round barn was built in the late 1800's. Peter French actually designed and had his crews build at least half a dozen similar ones. One main advantage to the round design was to allow training teams of horses to pull wagons, indoors during the winter.

Kind of like Frank Mars' curved sheep barn at Milky Way Farm -- sheep couldn't see from one end to the other, might've made them more secure.

Nice to see those pictures of Hart mountain , Burnham.
I was up there in 1988.
Didn't much enjoy the hot springs, as it was a 118 degree day.
Now, that didn't keep me from taking a dip, but took 'bout all of the pleasure out of it.

I hear that, Stig.

It was very pleasant mid 70's daytime temps when we were there. We soaked in the late afternoons, mid 60's, so just about perfect. (Fahrenheit, )


You sure have seen a lot of the western US. Kudos. It takes some extra effort to get to Hart Mountain.
