I work with a guy that puts spit on his earplugs. He says it makes for a tighter seal. I think it's an unsanitary practice.

yuck!

I'm not a fan of the foam plugs, they hold enough sweat as it is and will give me an earache by the end of the day. Two days and I'll have blackheads in my ears. I prefer the E.A.R. Caboflex plugs, they are soft vinyl and don't hold moisture.

If he bought some better ear protection he wouldn't have to launch a loogie on the one's he has now!

How do you know THAT? :?

Foam plugs are the only ones that work for me.

Because at one time I worked at a place that provided them for the employees and we had to wear them. By the end of the second day I threw them out and refused to wear them again. I went and bought the type that I could wear.

No, I mean how did you SEE blackheads in your ears?

I only wear my plugs once, then they go in my pocket and later the washing machine. Clean earplugs every time.

Butch, are you cutting/pasting from OLD threads? That's confusing. :|:

Spitting on earplugs.....gross. Hope he's not LICKING them :what:

I agree with the tug approach, I just found out about that little trick last year. I like the type Brian pictured, except I break the band alot so they don't stay long.

He puts them in his mouth and gives them a 'lil suck.

I use the little foam plugs and I just got the ear phones for the vertex helmet. No saliva here.

licking plugs is gross. eeeouuuwwww

Taking Brian's words from a past thread and popping them in today's is confusing:

I bought the foam ones a few months ago..Stihl brand! I always have a little trouble getting them to seat tight in the hole....have to twist them this way and that. I think having a lot of hair in your ears may help, so maybe I just need to age some more?

I might try spitting on them, but won't it feel like a wet willy when you put one in?

I roll them to insert, then really have to push more and roll them real tight to seat. It's kind of a hassle.

Yeah Butch, sounds unsanitary to me. Yellow foam ear plugs here. The rubber ( or whatever it is) plugs hurt after a couple hours. With the foam ones, I forget I even have them in.

Actually, to answer MB's question, looking it up, it says that spit is 98% water, and also has some anti-bacterial agents in it. It doesn't seem bad. Animal saliva is likely to have bacteria.

Jay, you need to learn how to put the plugs in. Reach over your head with your right hand and pull up on the top of your left ear, then insert the left plug. Reverse for the other side.

I wear ear plugs every time I fly, and that's beneath a helmet, and the hearing protection of the ear phones. I've seen guys give them a quick smootch, but I thought it was to lube them up for going in. Either way, it's nasty. 99% of us don't moisten them, and we get new ones each time.

I use the howard leight qb3.
They are 'ear caps' and do not insert all the way into your ear canal.
Doctors say to never insert anything in there as it can cause problems.

That spit seems nasty to me. When you sweat, the ear plugs get wet anyway, so whats the point?

I'm with Carl on this one. No goofing around or stretching involved and definetly no spit, roll 'em up and stick em in. I use the cheapo giant box from the safety supply store. Wear 'em once and toss em. When it's not summer though I wear muffs on my hardhat, much nicer imo.

That's cuz you guys probably have those big old ear canals....the kind your mom had to use a teaspoon to clean after you've been playing in the sandbox. :P

Those of us with more refined orifices, have to do the roll and tug approach or end up with crooked pieces of foam trying to pop out the side.

Jay, follow Brian's instructions and be amazed at how much easier it is. It was a duh moment for me, should have tried that a long time ago.
