Space Jump - Live!

He didn't seem to want to pause to enjoy the view. It was more like just go and get it over with. I figured he must have pretty much known that he was going to make it, or else might have lingered a bit. Perhaps sticking around up there increased some risks?

I thought he might hold up a bottle of Red Bull sports drink before taking the leap. I think it could have increased sales by a few million bottles per day for awhile.

It wasn't NASA.

Somebody had to cough up the bucks. I'm totally surprised there was only one sponsor.

Like I said, it was his third time. I bet he didn't flinch.

I'd be interested in what the results would be if you were to have some inexperienced person make that jump. Presumably the chute opens automatically at a certain altitude, just in case of having lost consciousness. Say take some guy in prison for life and if he can follow instructions to do the other small tasks like disconnect the hose, all he has to do is jump...maybe close his eyes first. Instant parole upon landing. It doesn't look all that hard to do, for science and freedom. A few minutes and you can erase all your bad deeds. You might even get rich from it. It would make a good story.

There was at least two good reasons for not lingering to look around. First, he had only ~9 minutes of air and ~6 minutes of descent. Second, he had two hours to look around during the ascent. He was probably thinking when that door opened: "Finally ... LET'S DO THIS!"

On the so called "jump", they said it was very important to do a "bunny hop" so as to NOT induce any spin (like a "half gainer with a full twist") into the free-fall since there was no air to stabilize an uncontrolled spin. They went on to say that excessive spin could cause excessive peripheral 'G-forces' which could be fatal. To that end, they also said that if a spin did happen, as it did, there was an inertial sensor to deploy a parachute to stop the spin. I suspect the chute automatically deployed to stop the spin which we saw. That's probably why he did not break the free-fall time record.

I guess he'll just have to do it again ... :lol:

Jack, I read that they came up with the stabilizing chute during the previous record by the man that assisted in this current effort, so it was used than as well. Perhaps this one created more drag? It also said that they have it pretty worked out at which point the spins can become fatal, but I don't remember the figure.

Why Didn’t Felix Free Fall for 5 Minutes? {link}

Joe Kittenger holds the record for the longest free fall at around 4 minutes and 36 seconds when he jumped from 102,000 feet. Even though Felix Baumgartner jumped from quite a bit higher, he only had a free fall time around 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

I wanna know what happened to the balloon. They showed the capsule coming down on chutes, but I never heard them say anything about the balloon. Does anyone know anything?

Well I can live with a crappy connection until she hates it as much as I do. Which is coming to light so fingers crossed.

just curious, when you are using someone else's signal, is there some carry over in terms of knowing what their browsing history is, and they knowing yours? I wouldn't want my grandmother knowing I was watching porn, her being old school and all. I might not want to know that gramps was watching it either. I don't watch all that much porn. :/:

I could probably read their history and them mine but neither parties are that tech savvy. As far as I know I use their password and I am just using the signal, when it comes in.
