Are the carb springs actually wood too?
 
JAy, do you mean that was basically machined rather than carved? You should see the hand carved stuff over at my son's coaches house. His dad was a frustrated physics professor who carved to blow off steam. There's probably a half ton of hand carved pieces there, I think I'll get some pictures.

No, Chip, probably a combination of both, or maybe it was all carved? Those round units would sure go faster on a lathe, though. I only mention pattern making because that piece looks tight and the high respect that I have for the trade. Working wood to close tolerances as is required is not an easy thing, and they also have to take wood movement into consideration in the way that they build their patterns. Some patterns get used for many years.
