Sales person commission

So most sales people in the arborist industry are paid commission. That commission is 10%. Is that 10% of the total job or 10% of the profit portion?

I would assume if a company didn't get a somewhat decent percentage of the jobs a bidder priced, said bidder would not have a position for long. So long as adequate money is made on the bids accepted . It might be a tightrope walk for the salesperson, no?
