Looking for a new lid but I have a big head. Right now I have the petzl rock but looking for something with muffs. Any input on this?

If you have a big head I think a Pacific is great. I've got a little head and it was always loose on me. Nice helmets.

I have the Petz Vertex and it has slots for the ear muffs. I put them on my Vertex a couple of months ago and whereas I love them on removals, they are a pain in the butt on prunes. I have since taken them off and gone back to ear plugs.

I have a huge head and run a Pacific Kevlar. They are very tough except the headband which I broke at the adjuster, but they replaced at no cost.

I haven't found them to be super comfortable because of the stud they run through the lid to catch the nylon chinstrap, it hit's you right in the back of the head. I reversed it and now it is fine.

I got the one with the brim thinking I could lean into the occasional vertical quick cut and take the top to the head and face with no reprocussions. It hasn't proven to be a worthwhile technique, lol.

I am looking at the Vertex now, then I can swap my muffs and have a lighter, more comfortable setup without the brim blocking my verticle sight line. One concern I have about them is they seem like weak plastic, but I won't know until I try. That's why I got the Pacific, you could take a tank head on and it would stay intact. The Pacific is heavy too.

Anyone want to tell me how tough the Vertex is?

I am wondering if it will take a good hit like the Pacific or if the plastic is brittle and prone to cracking on impact. My brother split his Husky helmet in 2, it was a good hit though, dazed him.

i beleive they are designed to take a hit from an 8 pound steel ball dropped from 6 feet or so. maybe the husky helmet was old? sun faded?

I've broken two pacifics.

One, I spiked on the ground out of fury, shattered a bit of it off.

the other fell off my head and out of the tree and hit a stub, little crater on the side of the helmet now.

I still like them.

I have the vertex and am happy with it. I can't speak for the pacific kevlar but I didn't buy one because I've heard other folks say they've had problems with them breaking in 'normal' use. FWIW I consider 'normal' use the once in a while drop out of the tree:what:

Sounds good, I am going to get one soon. A friend of mine who I am teaching to climb just got one and I thought it was really light and comfortable.

I have a Pacific and I really like it except for the head band turns my forehead black. Pacific sent me a different head band but that ones does it too. I just have to ware a bandana under it. Personally I think they are more confy than the 2 previous Petzls that I had.

I'm on my second Pacific. The first one was the old style so it didn't have cutouts for the earmuffs and the suspension system was held up by metal screws that eventually rusted out.

I think I remember seeing that they only weigh a few ounces more than the petzl helmets, but everyone makes a huge fuss over the weight:?

1.2 lbs and the vertex is 1lb. Not a big deal. I am thinking more for the ear muffs. I do not like ear plugs that much. Its a PITA to take them out and talk to the ground then put them back in. It really sucks when its cold because the plugs do not squish down as much.

Just as long as you don't switch earplugs from one ear to the other you should be OK on infections and cross pollination.

No, you're wrong. Once you've remove them, they've (along with your ears until you've clean them) become comtaminated. Additionally, even if you shove fresh ones back in, you're also shoving all the grit that's in your ear canal back inside. And I dare say what shit you're shoving in if you reuse the original plugs. When I put mine in, they stay in until I'm DONE, and when I remove them I put fresh ones back in.

never had an ear infection since i was a babe, i do remember ma pouing baby oil in my ear from a warm teaspoon. now i let the warm shwer water run in my ears, cleans em good.

You'd be surprised how much cooler the vertex stays when you open those vent holes, and even though the muffs can get a little hot in the summer, I don't think I'll ever role without them now. ...Just slide em up on the helmet when your not cutting...
