NWA Cottenwood Takedown

i agree , using it without a half hitch could cause some issues and quickly wear it out and create heat but it would have to be used with that in mind e.g. using it to connect slings to ropes and instead of tying a running bowline after your half hitch can save a few min ....... they are easy enough to a make out of tenex , just a bit bulkier.

Wow! great video Evan. Those were big limbs. Everything looked really smooth.

What is everyones take on using a steel biner in place of a running bowline? I've seen this in many videos, and done it several times myself, but I always feel like I'm cheating the rules a little. . . Clearly Evans video demonstrates that there is adequate strength, I'm just wondering how everyone feels about this as best practice. Not knocking it at all! just curious.

Love that song man 8)
If in doubt, two half-hitches, then clip.

Make sure not to be able to crush the biner between a log and the trunk.

Good job on the tree, Evan.

I sometimes will double half hitch and clip on limbs where the diameter is a bit small. I can't imagine the biner getting sideloaded in any significant way. I would expect gate malfunction before breaking. No need to damage gear.

Ya, Butch RB is good for critical conditions.

Great work on a giant tree Evan. Heck of a lot of ground work with those big limbs, I'd much rather be looking down on it all. Are you using a knot or eye splice to attach your 'biner and was that 5/8" line you were lowering on? I like the carabiner too and on smaller stuff I use a double locking snap, it's faster and easier for me.

Very impressive work...fine roping and rigging. Saw looked to be doing a fine job, too. Overall good stability on keeping the GoPro not whipping around too much. Helmet cams can induce seasickness in watchers.

Good share, thanks.

Nice job, Evan. Tell us some about the kboom there. Can it reach high or is it more of simply a log truck? Were those all fw pieces in the littler truck? If so did they cut the fw in the truck or on the ground or what?

Its a 8ton capacity at 16' I believe. 75'ish reach maybe 78'. Its much more then a log truck. Crane was recently remounted on that custom truck. 17' dump bed with removable top.

Smaller diameter wood that wasn't chippable was bucked for firewood in the truck.

I was think the saw was working great too. Thanks. My main thing need to work on is aiming the camera down a little more. Would've been better shots.

XMan has a much larger KB, and Mike Poor as well. Though his is something like a 75 tonner with a massively long boom! He's on facebook, and both are on TreeBuzz. XMan makes the X Rigging rings.

I agree with others about using a sling. No biner worries then, and you can have it pre-rigged while waiting for the rope after the last turn

I'm pretty sure 75 ton is not the same measurement the owner was giving me for comparison. We gotten as David or Mike what their capacities are at short reach and long reach. I'm not an expert but I think that "75 ton" can't actually pick up 170k lbs.

PS. Its 5/8 stable braid with a bow line that the biner is through.

Thats right, kudos to the ground crew. It wouldn't be possible to go big without them. NWA has an awesome team I'm stoked to work with. Everyone's a climber is a big plus too. Different stages of experience, but none the less, not just groundmen.

"Rosetta Stoned"

Alright then, picture this if you will:
10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my "need to know" post, just outside of Area 51.
Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thing with just a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this.
Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping...
Holy friggin' shit!

Then the X-Files being, looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan with Isabella Rossellini lips and breath that reeked of vanilla Chig Champa,
did a slow-mo Matrix descent out of the butt end of the banana vessel and hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw, and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip and all I could think was: "I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice that I pissed my fuckin' pants."

So light in his way,
Like an apparition,
He had me crying out,
"frig me,
It's gotta be,
Deadhead Chemistry,
The blotter got right on top of me,
Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!"

And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning, E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
He said, "You are the Chosen One, the One who will deliver the message. A message of hope for those who choose to hear it and a warning for those who do not."
Me. The Chosen One?
They chose me!!!
And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school.

You better.
You better.
You better.
You better listen.

Then he looked right through me
With somniferous almond eyes.
Don't even know what that means
Must remember to write it down.
This is so real.
Like the time he floated away.
See my heart is pounding,
'Cause this shit never happens to me.

Can't breathe, right now!
It was so real.
Like I woke up in Wonderland.
All sort of terrifying.
And I don't wanna be all alone when I tell this story.
And can anyone tell me why
you all sound like Peanut's parents
Will I ever be coming down?
This is so real.
Finally it's my lucky day.
See my heart is racing,
'Cause this shit never happens to me.

Can't breathe, right now!

You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I just said, see the Dead ain't touring.
And this wasn't all in my head.
See they took me by the hand and invited me right in,
Then they showed me something.
I don't even know where to begin.

STRAPPED DOWN MY BED. FEET COLD AND EYES RED.
I'M OUT MY HEAD. AM I ALIVE, AM I DEAD?
CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT THEY SAID.
GOD DAMN. SHIT THE BED!

(high... I I I I I... high... I I I I I)
(high)
[repeated]

Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be the one.
Born to bear and read to all
The details of our ending.
To write it down for all the world to see.
But I forgot my pen,
Shit the bed again,
Typical.

STRAPPED DOWN MY BED. FEET COLD AND EYES RED.
I'M OUT MY HEAD. AM I ALIVE, AM I DEAD?
SUNKIST AND SUDAFED, GYROSCOPES AND INFRARED.
WON'T HELP, BRAIN DEAD.
CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT THEY SAID.
GOD DAMN SHIT THE BED!

I...!!!

CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT THEY SAID TO ME.
CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT THEY SAID TO ME
MADE OUT TO BE A HERO!!!
Can't remember what they said.

BOB HELP ME.
Can't remember what they said.

DON'T KNOW.
WON'T KNOW.
[repeated]

GOD DAMN SHIT THE BED!

Great work Evan. Was there any chance that the tree could have been felled? Or would that have been too high of impact?

Very nice vid and work, Evan. How about a rigging clevis in place of a carabiner? A half inch one is going to be giving around twice the tensile strength, with less vulnerability compared to a steel carabiner.A bit more time to thread the pin and to disconnect, but they get the job done very reliably. The only real downside I see is dropping the pin, no fun in that. Worn in, the pin spins easily.

Only means carrying one sling, too. You have the second on the hook.

Was there anything critical in the drop, aside from the water line?

I've been driving past an old job where it became apparent with the first new water bill that I'd cracked the residential water line. $500 later for plumber...and a credit from the water company for the $500, and it was over. my 36" spar missed the crash pad by a foot, and hit right at the edge of the flat lawn, going down the hill. A very vulnerable spot, IMO. Oops.

Nice video Evan! i kept waiting for a shock load shot but crew on the ropes proved me wrong. Great job by all.

I see my idea to use a clevis for rigging, instead of a carabiner for that application, was met with tremendous enthusiasm! :|: Strong little gizmos, and cheap....you guys don't like to use them? The extra time factor to open and close?
